My Pomeranian has daily seizures. Why aren't his meds working?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | unneutered | 7 lbs

Pomeranian(2y/o, 7lbs) has concerning episodes. He lays down, drools, whimpers, becomes dazed&unresponsive. Paces around with weak rear end&tail between legs/legs dragging. Started when he was 1y/o. Vets thought: liver shunt, IBD, anxiety & seizures/epilepsy(new). Palletar Luxation was confirmed. Prescribed meds: gabapentin(pain), omeprazole(stomach upset), zonisamide(seizures), clonidine(anxiety). blood&urine tests came back fine. Episodes occur everyday for 2-3hrs. What’s causing this? Help..

It sounds like his seizures are not well controlled. What you are describing is partial (focal) seizures. I suggest you speak to your vet so they can suggest another medication. Phenobarbital is the drug I would suggest using. ( https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951440 )
