My cat is pregnant. What are the signs of labor for a first-time mom?

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 1 month old

Further 2 my last question: yes the box is easy for my cat 2 get in and out off and is not 2 high so she wouldn't need 2 jump or sturggle while going in and out. What signs would it be 2 look out for as it is her 1st litter and has about 2 weeks left as it is all new 2 me

How can i tell when my cat is going into labor and make sure she is doing ok
Hello. There are 3 stages of labor in the cat. First stage: The cervix dilates & uterine contractions begin. The queen may become restless, exhibit excessive grooming, purr, scratch the nesting box/area, & pace during this stage. At the end of the first stage, the queen will settle into her nesting box/area. The first stage can last from a few hours up to 24 hours. Stage two: Delivery of the kittens. Strong abdominal contractions are visible & the first litten is usually delivered within 60 minutes of seeing the contractions. Kittens are usually delivered every 30-60 minutes, but delivery can last 16-18 hours. Third stage: Delivery of the fetal membranes although this may happen concurrently with second stage labor. Delivery of the kittens is interspersed with the delivery of the placentas, too. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Cats are pregnant for 60-63 days. When cats are pregnant they tend to be friendlier. Sadly there are no specific signs to indicate labor until Stage 1 starts, which is nesting. I would keep her indoors and consider keeping her in a separate room. Cats like privacy and can delay the birth of kittens after some are born up to 24 hrs. Keep people and other animals out of the room once she starts going in to labor. Milk can appear with in the mammary glands up to a few days to 1 week before labor. I hope this helps and I wish Macka the best!

How can i tell when my cat is going into labor
Hello. Many cats will begin looking for out of the way places to have their kittens, a closet, a pile of laundry, or under a bed or bureau. But I have also known of cats having their litters right in the middle of the owner's bed. You might notice a slight mucoid discharge that may be a little bloody, but cats are so fastidious you may not notice this. If your cat seems a bit distracted or disinterested in things, has a loss of appetite or may be a little grumpy, she is probably getting close to her time. If you know the breeding date, count approximately 63 days & that should give you her due date. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

My cat is pregnant and her abdomen is pretty huge right now and I would like to know what are some signs of when she's ready to give birth. Also, I'm pretty worried about her because she's a small cat. I'm worried she won't be able to take on labor.
Pregnancy in cats lasts about 60-65 days, so if you know when she was bred you'll be able to determine when she may be due. You can also bring her into your vet for an X-ray if she is close to labor to count how many kittens to expect when she does go into labor. Signs of labor can include trying to find a place to nest, pacing and restlessness, waxing of the nipples (small waxy discharge that appears before milk comes in), active visible contractions along the body, not wanting to eat (usually a day or so before), and actively straining or going into labor. If she is in active labor for more than 24 hours without any kittens, goes more than 24 hours between kittens (if you know there are more present) while still showing signs of labor, or seems in great distress (more so than normal labor), then these are all signs of possible dystocia (difficult birth) and Kitteh should be brought to your vet ASAP for care.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! It could be a sign of impending labor! But not 100%. I would give her space and limit the number of people hovering around her and checking on her. Cats can delay labor when stressed. Leave her in a quiet room with a litter box, food and water. Provide a comfortable box or bed for her to have the babies. Check on her every few hours. Good luck!

It sounds like her time to have her kittens could be nearing! You can read this article on birthing kittens for more details: https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952101 but you can read there that "Several hours (and perhaps a whole day) of restlessness, grooming, nesting, pacing, panting, vomiting, and crying indicates that labor has begun. Like the dog, there is often a drop in body temperature (to less than 99 degrees F) indicating contractions will commence in the next 12 to 36 hours but this is not as reliable a finding as in the female dog. The female cat secludes herself in her selected nest area and begins to purr." It sounds like your kitty may be grooming and nesting, so this could be the start of getting ready to have the babies. I would watch for pacing, panting, vomiting and crying which are signs that birth is very soon.

My cat is 63 days pregnant today she has been sleeping pretty much all day is that a sign she is going into labor soon
Although the timing would be right, normally signs of labour include restlessness and nesting. The closer to the birth they are, they more queens tend to sleep because of the extra weight put on and being more tired and less agile. So in general I would not say that this is a sign of imminent labour.

If my cat is expecting, what is required of me to do? How do i ensure her safety this?
Congratulations! So normal gestation period is around 65 days before expecting kittens. Typically cats go through labor without any need for assistance or c-section: however, you should make her a whelping box (towels, bedding) to have her kittens in, which is usually a nice warm part of the house. Then let nature take its course. Once her rectal temperature drops below 99 degrees F you should expect kittens within 24-48 hrs, and it can take 1-3 days for her to complete the labor process. Monitor honey for any abnormal discharge which would be green or black. Small bloody or clear discharge is normal. Then watch her for signs of labor which includes panting, pacing, restlessness and gen stomach contractions. She should expel the kittens almost immediately after contractions start. I hope you also had imaging (radiographs) done on her so that you know how many kittens to expect. If all goes well you should have kittens any day now. Without examining her in person or knowing when she was bred, it would be hard to determine. Since she was found and is very skinny, it would be best to bring her to your vet anyway so they can confirm the pregnancy, treat any health issues and make sure the kittens are doing OK. If she is far enough along, they may be able to take an X-ray to determine how many kittens to expect and provide a rough estimate of her due date. Signs a cat is nearing labor can include looking for a place to nest, changes in appetite, restlessness, temperature changes, waxing of the nipples (producing a waxy milk-like substance) visible contractions, etc. If you see these signs then she may be going into labor. If she doesn't produce a kitten after several hours, seems exhausted, or in severe distress, seeking veterinary care is best to make sure there aren't any complications.
