Dog's eye has yellow discharge and is swollen. Can I treat it at home?

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 4 years and 1 month old | 50 lbs

My dogs eye started having a yellow/cream colored liquid coming from his eye and now it's a little swollen. I just moved across the country and am limited on funds so I'm hoping this is something over the counter meds can fix? If not then I will of course take him to the vet. I've attached some photos.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Cash. It looks and sounds like he has an eye infection. Unfortunately this cannot be treated at home. Any eye problem needs to be checked out by a vet promptly as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take him into the vet first thing in the morning. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. Judging from the pictures and your description, I suspect that what you are seeing is due to an eye infection, irritation or dry eye. If you are unable to get to your veterinarian right away, there are over the counter drops that you can use. I've recommended Systane eye drops in the past to clients and that helps lubricate the eyes quite well. If this is infections, however, antibiotic eye medication will be needed so you will need to have Leah seen by a veterinarian to have antibiotic eye medication prescribed. I hope this helps! Hi I came home last night from work and my dogs eye was completely swollen, bloodshot red and he is unable to shut his eye, I went to the vet but I had to pay $98 in order for them to see him but I don’t have that right now . I just need to know what
Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. From the picture, it appears that the eye is much large than the left eye, indicating either trauma to the eye or a disease such as glaucoma. I suspect this is likely due to trauma. He may have fallen while at home and hit his head or ran into something and his eye is now wanting to fall out of the socket. I would recommend applying cool and warm compress to the eye to help take down some of the inflammation and placing a plastic cone around his neck so that he does not further traumatize the eye. I would recommend getting him in to see a veterinarian right away when you can so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! I would also recommend giving Well and Good Buffered Aspirin for Dogs (can find at Petco). Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Trouble! When it comes to eyes it is best to have them evaluated by a Vet. Medications need to be prescribed that are safe to be put in the eye. He likely has doggie pink eye, conjunctivitis or allergies. But he could have a corneal scratch, dry eye or even worse glaucoma or uveitis. There are no at home medications that are safe to put in the eye. You can warm compress the eye (be sure you can tolerate it on your skin) twice daily and try an antihistamine (read the below link). This is concerning and could be due to conjunctivitis as you pointed out though other possibilities such as a foreign body reaction, corneal ulcer or laceration or even inflammation of the periocular structures could also be going on. Regardless, this does warrant a visit to your veterinarian as soon as possible as he is likely painful. They would be able to examine his eye closely and start therapy based on findings. My dog has a swollen eye. He has not had any accidents or anything. I’ve been doing warm compress but not seeing any improvement. He doesn’t have any other symptoms and has been on the Same food which is pure balance salmon.

It would be best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment at this point as this may be something concerning such as a corneal injury if it is in the eyeball per se for example or due to an infection of the skin around it though it is not possible to know this based on a picture. Poor Majic! Unfortunately, if the eye is infected, there is nothing you can buy over-the-counter that will help - eye infections require prescription antibiotic drops to treat. You can try rinsing the eye with plain saline eye wash and using a soft washcloth or cotton ball to wipe away any discharge, which may help make her more comfortable until you can get her in to see a vet. If costs are an issue, you may want to look for a low-cost SPCA clinic in your area, or apply online for Care Credit (a payment plan accepted by most vet clinics): www.carecredit.com

It certainly looks as though Chavo has somehow irritated his eye and likely has continued to rub it causing more irritation. My biggest concern would be that he has scratched his cornea (the outermost surface if his eye) which can be a very painful condition and can lead to infection. There is also a chance that the irritation and discharge is just from allergies, this would be the best case scenario. Since you are unable to bring Chavo in to see a vet you could try calling your vet and see if they can recommend an over the counter allergy medication that may help. Good luck!
