Puppy stomach issues? How to transition food with unknown brand?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 26 days old | 30 lbs

Our new puppy’s foster parent gave us some of his leftover food in a ziplock and 2 nurtirsource samples. Upon further inspection after he seemed to have stomach issues today they seemed to be different. We have yet to hear back from the foster and don’t know what brand the original was and can’t find nutrisource anywhere. We want to transition him to blue wilderness but only have enough of the old for tonight to combine. How should we go about weaning him without even knowing the original brand?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Blue. If you don't have enough to make a slow transition, you will have to make do with what you have and hope the new food doesn't upset his stomach. Mix the foods together tonight, and then give him the new food in the morning. As an aside, I do not recommend feeding Blue Wilderness. It is a terrible food, and it's one of the foods linked to causing dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. The FDA is investigating that link. You would be hard pressed to find any vet who recommends Blue Buffalo, as it causes many other issues such as hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. I would feed him a much better brand such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, or Iams. I hope this helps!

I'm sorry Hulk has been having problems with soft stool! It could be that his diet was causing the diarrhea, but it could also be that he had a GI illness or ate something rotten. It's good that the bland diet has helped clear it up, and I would find another food to feed him besides Blue Buffalo. I am not a fan at all of it, there are many cases of dogs having GI issues on it. It also have very poor quality control over how it is made, and they have had a number of recalls. Brands of food I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. You can get his used to one of these new brands by slowly adding it to the bland diet, and over time, increasing the amount of the new food and decreasing the bland diet until he is eating the bland diet only. I have had a lot of problems with my patients eating blue buffalo. I would off Howie plain boneless skin chicken breast white and rice for about 3 days then slow transition him from the chicken and rice to a new diet. I would look into natural balance, science diet, royal canin or iams. These are all great foods that are less likely to upset him stomach. If they have a sensitive stomach formula, try that. I would also keep him on his probiotic non-stop. Finally, before finished the giardia meds, I would have your vet recheck his poop sample to ensure it is completely gone. If he continues to vomit or if he starts having diarrhea again, I would have your vet take another look him. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I think it is a great idea to slowly mix his regular dog food in with the chicken and rice over a week and see how that goes. But first give him a good 3-5 days with JUST chicken and rice, then start mixing. If he starts vomiting with the regular food maybe you need to change brands of food. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! There have been a lot of issues with Blue Buffalo but most of what you read online is from upset pet owners who’s pets got sick or died and they want to blame a product or food. Sadly they do this with out evidence to back it up. If Patches is doing well it’s up to you if you want to change it. Blue Buffalo isn’t a brand I recommend. I recommend Hill’s, Royal Canin and Purina because they have veterinary nutritionists on staff. Have a good day!

Blue Buffalo is not a good food despite what all their marketing ads tell you. You will find very few vets that think it's a good choice. She would be better off back on Purina and I'd suggest the Pro Plan Puppy for large breed dogs. I think you should switch her back slowly to the Purina. It is typical for dogs to poop a lot of Blue Buffalo as they don't really seem to absorb/digest much of it. Poor Addison! This could be caused by several things from large water intake, parasites, or even her dog food. Blue buffalo can actually be too rich for some dogs. I have also seen other complications from eating blue buffalo like bladder crystals and bladder stones. You some consider switching her to something With less protein like science diet, Royal canin, or Iams. If you want a food with a more “natural” approach, natural balance is also a good choice. When you switch her, I would slowly mix in the new food and gradually transition her over a 10 to 14 day period. Also, I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to do a fecal to check for worms. I would make sure they also check for giardia and campylobacter as these are parasites/bacteria that commonly can cause similar issues but are difficult to diagnose. Lastly, i would get her started on some probiotics. I like ones made by vetriscience and Thorne. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better.

Poor Theo! Given that he was throwing up the Blue Buffalo (BB) food, but now isn't vomiting on the Simply Nurish, I would suspect that the BB isn't agreeing with his stomach. As for his poop, changes in diet can lead to looser stools. Even though you did half and half to help him switch, typically it's better to do 1/4 new food and 3/4 old food to start. To help Theo with his diarrhea, I can give you a home remedy to try. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. I would also recommend getting Theo's vaccines done ASAP if he's seven months of age. I see that you are in Utah, and a rabies vaccines for all dogs is required by law, so it is important that he get that vaccines plus the DHPPi combination shot (distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis, parainfluenza) once he is feeling better. Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Usually we recommend a switch to a new food slowly to avoid the signs that you are seeing now (diarrhea, upset stomach, etc.). If you are already seeing these signs then there is no point on a slow switch. I would suggest switching over to the new food now. Be prepared for more diarrhea/upset stomach however, and if you can go buy some boneless skinless chicken breasts and rice, and boil BOTH of these, and feed this for a few days once you get it, it might help. Then mix in the new food slowly. In the mean-time though, just switch to the new food. Best of luck with Aspen!

This morning i noticed my 8 month old puppy had very watery diarrhea it was a yellowish orange. He has no other synptoms, besides that hes normal no sickness or throwing up. We did just change his food without weaning. Could it be just from switching
It is very likely that his diarrhea was caused by the sudden food change. The best thing to do now is the following: Fast Blue for 12 hrs to calm down the gut. Then put Blue on bland food for a day or two, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition to his new food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if he gets lethargic, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

The loose stool could be from his diet, parasites, infection, or something he ate. Your vet can test a stool sample for parasites and then prescribe a dewormer, if needed. You could also add a probiotic, Fortiflora or Proviable to his food and see if that helps. Blue Wilderness is a good high quality food so changing to that might help, too. You should gradually change food by mixing his old food in with the new as abrupt diet change can cause vomiting and diarrhea.
