My puppy breathes fast sleeping and wheezes after eating. Is she okay?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 13 days old | 20 lbs

I just got a new rescue puppy. We are not sure her breed. She makes asthma-like breathing noises after she eats. And we have noticed her breathing very quickly when sleeping. Is she okay?

Breathing quickly when sleeping can be normal, as dogs dream and they can have breathing changes in response to their dreams. It may be Nala is eating too quickly causing the breathing you are seeing after she eats. Try giving her smaller amounts of food at a time to see if that helps.

This rapid breathing you are seeing in Noah may be due to him dreaming. Puppies dream, and it can be accompanied by movements and changes in breathing. If his breathing is normal during the day, I would not worry about it :-)

I just got a 6 week old Aussie puppy and she is spunky and playful. However she breathes fast while sleeping and will sometimes pant when she wakes up. Is this normal?

Hello, congratulations on your new Pup. Puppies will have a shorter and quicker respiratory rate than an older dog. As long as your puppy is not having any nasal discharge, coughing, lethargy, sneezing, or eye discharge then this rapid respirations are likely a variance of normal. If you have noted any of the above signs then she should be evaluated sooner. However, if you have not scheduled Maya for her first vet appointment and puppy exam, you should so that they may examine her and make sure that her lungs and heart sounds normal as well as administer her puppy vaccines and deworming as necessary. Our 7 week old puppy is shaking when asleep and breathing fast. He was given a pill for worms and one for flees. Is this normal?
If your puppy continues this behavior once awake, then this is concerning and requires veterinary examination. If it is just while he is asleep and once awake he is his normal self, then he is likely dreaming. It isn't unusual for puppies to twitch/move/vocalize/and breath fast for periods when sleeping.

I would recommend that you have Rousey checked out by a vet. Breathing that quickly is not normal. While sleeping, she should breathe less than 20 times in a minute. Increased respiratory rate at night could indicate heart or lung disease, anemia, or pneumonia. If she has fractured ribs, she could benefit from pain medications. She should probably also be checked for intestinal parasites, which are easily picked up while hanging out on the streets.

Fast breathing can be caused by stress, pain, excitement, or genuine breathing problems. If this is not after play, strenuous exercise, or after a stressful moment it may indicate a health problem. I would have Bruno seen by a veterinarian ASAP if this has continued.

I would recommend counting Bella's respiratory rate when she is completely asleep - if she is tachypneic because of respiratory or cardiac disease it should continue during sleep. If her respiratory rate is less than 30 when she is sleeping the rapid breathing is probably behavioral. If her sleeping respiratory rate is over 30 (it is important that she is in deep sleep), or if she starts coughing or has an increase in effort when breathing you should see a vet right away.

I have a 13 week old lab, pit mix. (Jenson) he seems to get hot when he sleeps, and breathes fast and hard, and his nose gets hot. He also jerks cries, and paints (spelling?) really hard in his sleep. Is that normal?
This sounds like normal puppy dreams and is nothing to worry about. Puppies tend to have very vivid dreams doing things they would be doing if they were awake, such as running, jumping, barking and playing.
