What's the best food for my indoor cat's urinary health and hairballs?

Pet's info: Cat | Nebelung | Male | neutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 10 lbs

I have a 2 year old healthy long hair, indoor-only grey/blue neutered male cat. What is the very best food I can buy for him considering muscle health, urinary health, hairballs, and longevity? A combination of foods? Do you have a recommendation for water and litter also?

Do not combine foods, this causes GI upset. Brands of food I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, and Iams. I recommend these foods because they run their own feeding trials, meet AAFCO standards, and have veterinary nutritionists on staff. They are the only four brands to do this. I think an indoor cat formula would be best for Storm. As for water, get a pet water fountain. It provides a constant source of fresh water, and encourages cats to drink. I have one for my cats, and they love it. Don't change litter if he has one he likes. Cats are very picky about litter, and a change in litter can lead to them not using their box.

What brand of cat food do you recommend?
As a general rule of thumb, I find Science Diet, Purina ProPlan and Royal Canin foods to be of a high quality. These companies thoroughly analyze their foods, run controlled clinical feeding studies and carefully source their ingredients. While there are plenty of other good food brands available, I find these three to be quite consistent. As a male cat, I typically recommend feeding a mix of both wet and dry foods. Neutered male cats have a risk of developing urethral obstructions, and increased water content in the wet food can help to slightly decrease this risk. Anytime you make a change in diet, be sure to do so gradually by mixing the old and new foods together over 5-7 days.

Hi. Which brand of food do you recommend for a cat? I have a two year old spayed female dsh cat. I used royal at first and I used sanabel for a while. Now I use josera catelux but I heard that it's not a good food and super premium foods are better.
Brands of food I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I feed my cat Iams and they love it. You can feed Miu a urinary care food, just not a prescription one. Those are formulated specifically for cats with existing urinary problems.

hello could you tell me the best dry food for cats with urinary problems, what is the difference with wet urinary food and dry food how it helps cats?
The best foods for urinary problems in cats are going to be prescription diets. The urinary diets are designed to increase water consumption and change the ph of the urine to prevent crystal formation and urinary tract infections. Purina, hills and royal canine all make urinary prescription foods in dry and wet. It is possible wet food would keep the urine more diluted due to the extra water content. If the cat is urinating out of the box this could be behavioral and a specific food would not cure this problem. I would take your cats to a veterinarian to rule out a medical issue and if one is found they can write you a prescription for food. The veterinarian will most likely want to run a urine sample and possiblely take a x-ray to check for bladder stones. If it is decided it is a behavioral problem I recommend increasing the number of litter boxes , putting litter boxes in different areas, and trying felio way. Felioway is a cat pheromone that helps with stress.

A high quality food of science diet, royal canin, iams, or purina are great brands. Iams makes a hairball control. You can also purchase hairball medications/supplements and use your favorite food.

Any major brand name that has an indoor care cat food line would be good. So this would mean something like Purina indoor cat, pedigree, Hills or Royal Canin. If you want to change the food do so slowly as sudden food changes can cause diarrhea and inappetence in a cat. So gradually mix the new food in with their old food, increasing the amount of new food over about a week time.

what's the best kind of food you recommend for a 6 month old siberian kitten? she gets an upset stomach easily, as in her stool becomes quite liquidy when I give her anything different from her current dry food (whiskas) to any other dry food/ wet
I highly recommend feeding either Royal Canin or Hill's Science diet. Both are high quality foods that cats seen to enjoy. In order to avoid GI upset, make the switch slowly. Mix together her old food and her new food, and over the course of two weeks, slowly increase the amount of new food and decrease the amount of old food until she is eating the new food only.

I switched cat food brands and now Sammy has thrown up 3 times-should I be concerned? What is the best dry cat food for an indoor cat?
There are many good cat food brands. Some of my favorites are Science Diet, Purina Proplan, and Royal Canin. They all should have an adult maintenance diet for an indoor cat. These three brands of cat food do extensive research on their diets and that is why I recommend them. However, there are many other great pet food brands out there in addition to these. The most important part about changing a cat's diet, is to do so gradually over at least about one week. If you abruptly change them from one food to another, you will likely cause them to get an upset stomach. Symptoms of this can be vomiting and diarrhea. That being said, there are numerous other causes of vomiting in cats including G.I. obstruction, parasites and secondary to kidney disease to name a few. These other causes will require treatment from a veterinarian. So if you were worried about Sammy, it is always a good idea to have her evaluated by a veterinarian to make sure that there is not more going on. Best of luck with

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Romeo. What a handsome boy! Pet nutrition is a confusing topic and the internet is filled with inaccurate information. I agree that high quality ingredients are important. However, it is equally important that these ingredients are combined appropriately and in the right proportions to give the best nutrition. For this reason, I support companies that have board certified veterinary nutritionists on staff and perform feeding trials in live animals as opposed to simple laboratory analysis. I like Purina ProPlan, Royal Canin and Hill's Science Diet. They are will have each have a variety of flavors and formulas that would be appropriate for him. I hope this information helps!

Hi there! Hunny Cat is very cute! I believe it's better to feed cats canned food. It has more moisture and adds a little bit more hydration to their daily intake. Later in life, cats can commonly develop kidney disease and/or urinary bladder disease. In both cases, cats will benefit greatly from the increased water content of a canned diet. The canned food is a lot better too to help keep an indoor cat's weight in check. All indoor cats have a tendency to become overweight, as they don't exercise as much as feral cats. Since cats usually will ingest the canned food right away, it is easier to portion the food out and also provide cats with meal times. This is very helpful to increase their metabolism, and to help discourage them from gaining weight. Far too often, we see cats being fed a pile of dried food in a bowl where they eat buffet-style on and off all day long. This can easily lead to weight gain and obesity, as well as all sorts of health problems. Nutro is good food, and so
