My new kitten is scared and hiding. How can I get her to eat?

Hi! We have a new kitten that’s a little scared. We have her in a bathroom with everything she needs. We held her today because she likes that and we walked around and showed her the upstairs. She really seemed to like us but when we put her back downstairs she hid again. We need to get her to eat because she hasn’t yet. What do I do?

Moving into a new home is stressful and scary to a kitten,. Leaving food out in the bathroom for Gigi, she will eat. Top it with some boiled white meat chicken (no bones) or tuna in spring water to tempt her to eat.

Congrats on your new kitten! Moving to a new home is very stressful, and adding on flying to this new home, and Adelaide will be very stressed. It will take her a couple of days to get used to her new home. She may be coming out at night when you are asleep, and I would make sure to leave out food and water at all times for her to have when she decides to come out. I would leave her be for now, don't try to get her to come out to you, she will come out in her own time. Leave out some boiled white meat chicken (no bones) or you can soak her kitten food in tuna juice to tempt her to eat. When you do see her moving around, don't make sudden movements towards her, or make a big deal of it. Ignore her until she comes to you, and gently give her pets and praise. Be patient, it will take time for her to adjust, but she will get used to her new home :-)

From Gati's point of view moving house is a very scary experience. Cats are very sensitive to stress. Let her hide where she wants and I would suggest putting her things in that room so she feels safe. Make it easy for her to access food water and litter in this room. Give her some space and time and she will become more comfortable and gradually explore the house. You can get diffusers for cats that release pheromones they can help.

Cats can take some time to settle down and allowing her space and time to hide is an important step in her gaining an awareness of her new environment; I recommend you leave food and litter close to where she wants to hide and slowly bring them out as she settles down. Hello, and congratulations on your new kitty! It is not unusual for new cats to hide in the first few days after arriving at their new home. I would provide a bit of food and water in the nook where she is hiding, and gradually try to increase your interactions with her over the next few days and weeks. For example, you can try offering her a tasty treat in her nook, and let her sniff your hand. Provide other safe nooks in the house that she can choose from. Offer two litter boxes in two separate, quiet areas, and close to where she is hiding. Eventually, she should know that your presence means food, safety and companionship, and she will come out of her shell. You can also consider a kitty pheromone spray called Feliway, which can help to reduce stress for cats in new environments. With patience and diligence, I am sure that Salem will eventually come out of her shell! Good luck and I hope this helps!

Poor Onyx! She sounds quite scared. I would continue to allow her to familiarize herself with her new environment and you as her new ‘human’. Some cats will be quite sociable from the outset, others take time to adjust to new surroundings. Provide her with plenty of hiding places where she can be safe, give her space to become acclimated, and ensure she has food and water available in a safe location. You can spend time just sitting on the floor near her, maybe tease her with a toy on a string and see if you can coax her closer. Take it nice and slow with her and I suspect that soon she will be bouncing all over the house!

Moving into a new home is often frightening for a kitten, and it will take time for Amber to get used to her new home and you. I would give her lots of love and attention when she approaches you, including treats. This shows her that coming up to you is a good thing. Give her treats when she allows you to touch her. I would not try to approach her yourself, allow her to come to you. As she becomes adjusted to her home, she will eventually allow you to approach her.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Mickey. Congrats on your new cat! Moving into a new home is stressful, so it takes time and patience. Move him into a small room in your home, and put in there a litter box, food, and water. Visit him a couple of times a day, praising him and giving him treats when he comes out to see you. As he comes out more and more, you can play with him and give him love. Then after a couple of days, open the door to his room to let him explore. Initially, keep the amount of time he explores short, then gradually increase the time as he becomes more comfortable in your home. Eventually, he can be out of his room full time. In the beginning, keep him in his room when you go out so he feels safe. I hope this helps!

Leave food and water out, and he likely will come out to eat and drink while you are sleeping tonight. Should he come out when you are there, quietly praise him and give him treats. I would recommend keeping her in a small room for the first week or two. This allows her to feel safer in a small environment, as well as allows you to be able to see and bond with her. Poor Toby. He is likely just really scared. You may try to put him in a quiet room by himself with just his food and litter box to see if this helps to calm him and see if he will eat. You can also try to cook him some plain boneless skinless chicken breast to see if he will eat that. If this is all due to the change of environment and stress, his appetite should pick up once you take him back home. If not, I would definitely take him to your vet when you return. If at any point in your vacation, he shows other symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or stops eating completely then I would have a vet near you take a look at him. That vet will be able to see what else might be going on and even start him on an appetite stimulant if needed. I hope this helps!
