Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 5 days old | 15 lbs
I just adopted a puppy from my local shelter yesterday. When I got her she threw up once and hasn’t thrown up again. I assumed she was nervous from all the activity of being at petco. However, she is experiencing loose/watery stools. There is no blood in it. She has a good appetite and drinking lots of water. She is acting playful and full of energy. I want to know if there is a home remedy I can use like chicken stock and rice to fix her upset stomach or if I need to take her to the vet.

Hello. Congratulations on your new puppy and thank you for adopting from a shelter. It is always a good idea to have a new puppy checked out by your vet. A fecal exam should be done to check for various parasites EVEN IF the shelter dewormed her. Loose stools can come from stress, diet changes, viral or bacterial diseases and parasites. In the meantime, until you get an appointment, try using a little bit of rice, low sodium chicken broth and maybe a small amount of boiled chicken. This is a good bland diet mixture for pets with stomach upset. Perhaps she can get in to your vet for a check up within the next 1-2 days. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
