My Labrador, who loves food, suddenly won't eat. Is she sick?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 40 lbs

Our lab is just over a year old. We feed her 1 cup/3x/day. She has always loved food and got super excited when it is meal time. Within the past couple days she is acting like she doesn’t want to eat and eats real slow. I just tried to feed her and she didn’t even eat it at all. I’m starting to get really concerned as this is unlike her. If this is a real serious matter, are there any other symptoms I should be looking for? Should I just see if this continues for a couple more days?

This can actually be a sign Ruby is sick. This is concerning, as labs are typically very food orientated. Keep an eye on her this weekend and if she is still like this on Monday, have her seen by a vet.

I do not think him being neutered 6 months ago has anything to do with a poor appetite and lethargy. the heat can make dogs slow down but it doesn't make Labs not eat! Labs love food. I am worried and recommend you have him seen by your Vet for an exam, blood work and belly X-rays. Possible causes are: kidney problems secondary to Lyme disease (huge issue in US with labs, even young ones), ate something causing a blockage, cancer and many other things. I would take him in since it has been a few weeks. I wish you the best!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Dogs do not have to eat as often as we do, or even daily. If Lucille is still interested in food, drinking water, and not vomiting or diarrhea, I would continue to monitor her for another 24 hours. I would see a vet if the lethargy and decrease appetite continues. She could be coming down with something and may get worse, or getting over something and bounce back. Please do not give any over the counter medications unless directed by a vet because some medications are toxic to dogs. Good luck and kisses to Lucille!

Poor Stryker! It definitely sounds like something is wrong. In a young dog like this (especially a Lab!), one thing that I worry about if she hasn't eaten in several days is that she may have an intestinal blockage due to something she swallowed. It's also possible that she has an illness or infection of some kind, dental pain or something wrong with her mouth, or may have ingested something toxic. Since it's been multiple days now that she isn't eating, I would definitely recommend taking her to the vet for an exam as soon as you can. He/she can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.

Poor pup! Labs are notorious for eating things they should not, and she could have a foreign body causing her symptoms. It could also be she has a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, or could have pancreatitis. Since she is not eating or drinking as well as vomiting, I would take her into a vet now. Hi and thanks for posting. Sounds like this is unusual behavior for Ruby and certainly is concerning. There can be a number of things that may be going on here and it is very hard to say what exactly is the cause without examining Ruby in person. I would recommend Ruby sees a veterinarian for a hands on exam as soon as possible to help pinpoint where the problem is. Your veterinarian may also recommend x-rays, blood work, fecal testing, or other tests to aide in an accurate diagnosis.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Belle. It can be stressful for an adult dog to have a puppy introduced to the home. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian though to ensure there is not an illness contributing to her lack of appetite. Labradors typically have huge appetites so it worries me a bit that she is not eating. I hope this information helps!

As long as Jacky is not sick and is otherwise normal, I would recommend switching to a different food altogether and consider canned food as well. If you still find he has a picky appetite, I would recommend adding chicken breast or broth to his current diet and see if this helps increase his appetite. I hope this helps! Drooling can be a sign of pain or nausea. IF she is feeling bad then she may need to see your vet. they can check her mouth and teeth for any wounds or sores or abscesses or look for any pain anywhere else. If she is not eating or having diarrhea, then that is a sign it is from nausea and they can provide medicine for that. You can try boiled chicken and rice to see if she is interested in that food and see how she handles that.

Yes I recommend to take Ruby in to be seen by her veterinarian. When pets are sick for 24 hours and not eating well, it’s best to play it safe and have her checked out. There are many causes for not feeling well. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

This may not be normal, and a sudden decrease in appetite can be one of the first signs a dog is sick. Keep a close eye on Patsy, and if she is still acting this way in the morning, have her seen by a vet.
