Bacon in dog's ear: Will it cause damage, infection, or deafness?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 18 lbs

I think I accidentally dropped a gnat sized piece of bacon into my dog’s ear canal! Can this damage her ear and cause deafness?!! What should I look for? Is it likely to affect her ability to hear? Or create an infection? I’m so worried!

Oh no! This potentially could cause problems because Kalli may scratch at the ear due to discomfort and it may develop into an ear infection. The best thing to do is have her seen by a vet now. The vet can check her ear to see if that piece of bacon is in it, and can remove it.

Redness alone doesn't indicate an ear infection but can be a symptom of it. If you suspect Angel may have one, or has symptoms bad enough it is affecting her hearing, it is best to seek veterinary care ASAP so they can look in the ear and get Angel started on a treatment plan of cleaning and medication. Usually, clearing up any infections will help improve hearing and pain/redness/irritation.

My dog ate half a package of raw bacon. What should I do o?
Ideally, she should be seen at the nearest veterinary ER. The doctors there can 8ndice vomiting via injection. This is most successful when done within 2 hours of ingestion. The bacon may cause stomach upset (vomiting or diarrhea) or, more seriously, it can cause pancreatitis (due to the fat content). Pancreatitis is painful and can be life threatening if not treated promptly. If a vet visit is not possible, withhold food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. If there is stomach upset, feed bland until symptoms resolve then transition slowly to the regular diet. Symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian include lethargy, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain.

I would take Radar into a vet immediately. This build up could be a sign of an ear infection, and when they are severe enough, the infection can cause vestibular symptoms such as a head tilt. It can also cause deafness if left untreated for too long. It's best that Radar is seen by a vet now for treatment. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Hello, my dog has a terrible ear infection. I think it allergy related. I came home from work and she had scratched them so bad she had blood in her bed.
Ouch, poor Remington! You are correct - most ear infections in dogs stem from underlying allergies. Allergy issues in dogs mostly cause skin problems and ears are skin, after all. The allergies could be associated with environmental issues (atopy), food allergies or flea allergies. I can certainly see the discharge and swelling in Remington's ear. Her excessive scratching obviously indicates that she's quite uncomfortable. Allergy issues cause dogs to itch, which damages the skin barrier and then leads to ear infections from an overgrowth of yeast and/or bacteria in the ear canal. There are no effective over the counter treatments for ear infections. At this point, I recommend taking Remington to her vet for an exam and ear cytology. Your vet will be able to look at her ear discharge under a microscope to determine the type of infection present, and will then prescribe an appropriate medication based on those results. Until you get to the vet, consider putting an e-collar (cone) on Rem

It's probably an ear infection, often it cannot be seen from the outside. Ear infections are very common in dogs, it is usually caused by either yeast or bacterial disease. the treatment is usually simple and straightforward, you will have to take Nala to the vet and get the ears checked, then a prescription ear drops will be prescribed according to the infectious agent.

When out for a walk within the last hour. my 12 month old Beagle found a slice of uncooked bacon. It was on the ground yesterday too, but today, she grabbed it and swallowed it before I could get it out of her mouth. How dangerous is this to her?
A small piece of raw bacon likely won't pose too big a risk. At worst, you may see some minor stomach upset (vomiting and/or diarrhea). Either can typically be managed at home with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. Symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian include persistent stomach upset, loss of appetite or abdominal pain.

Those are unlikely to cause an issue. If anything it could cause a mild upset tummy. If Jax has any pain, change in behavior, persistent vomiting of bloody diarrhea he needs to be seen by his veterinarian as those are signs of an abnormal reaction to this type of foreign body.

Poor Bailey - it is vital he is seen by a vet again as soon as possible to have the condition reassessed. Ensure he is fasting as it may be necessary to sedate him in order to fully examine the ear and identify any infections or growths which may be present and to ensure a deep clean can be performed. In some cases further tests for underlying causes such as allergies or thyroid disease may be recommended and in very rare cases surgery is required to remove or bypass areas with permanent scarring which may be preventing the normal healing process. Regular, routine cleaning of ears each week is recommended for dogs with recurrent problems

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear about Buddy. I would think that you would have noticed problems right after the foreign body entered the ear. He would have been scratching at the ear a lot, shaking his head, rubbing that ear on the floor, etc. If you are only noticing problems now I would think more about an allergic ear problem, water in the ear, a different foreign body in the ear, or a primary ear infection. I would advise that if he still scratches the ear and the signs are persistent, you should have your veterinarian check Buddy out. We are in a time of high allergies in dogs and ear problems can be a big part of the clinical picture, even if it is only one ear. Your vet can take a detailed history and do a complete physical exam/otoscopic exam of the ears. They can take a sample of discharge from the ear and look at it under the microscope looking for ear mites or signs of infection (bacteria, yeast, possibly some white blood cells, etc.) Your vet c

I would definitely be suspicious of an ear infection from the pictures and what you are describing. Ear infections usually have a primary cause that allows it to be infected and allergies are at the top of the list, so this is definitely possible, but both ears would be affected. Other common primary causes are something stuck in the ear and excessive moisture in the ear. It's best to have her evaluated by a veterinarian, so they can have a good look in the ear and provide the necessary medication to clear this up. For now, it will be good to gently flush the ear once every two day to help remove the debris from the ear - this will also help with treating the suspected infection.
