My dog bit off part of his nail, no bleeding. What should I do next?

My dog was chewing his nail and accidentally bit a good part of his nail off. It doesn’t look like it was bleeding at all but I don’t want him hurting it even more.

Chief may be ok. Keep an eye on him for now and if he keeps chewing at that nail or starts limping, have him seen by a vet. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

Take a look at his toe, there has to be a reason why he was chewing on it. He may have gotten an insect bite or something that kicked off the chewing. You can clean the area with some mild soap and a warm washcloth, making sure to get all the soap off afterward, then a light dab of petroleum jelly to keep it moist so it doesn't crack as it dries, staring more itching. If he continues to lick it, you can pull and baby sock over the paw to cover it and use bandage tape around the top, applied loosely to not restrict circulation to the foot to keep it in place. If it does not improve, if he continues to damage the nail or toe by chewing or it gets worse, get him in to see your vet as soon as possible. There could be some underlying problem you are not aware of causing him to lick the toe and nail.

My dog broke his nail running on the ice and I noticed it bleeding a bit again today. It doesn’t seem to be hurting him but he doesn’t really want me to touch it. I’m not sure if I should bring him in or not.
This looks like a minor injury and does not seem to risk and infection or major complication. Bleeding may be completely normal as nails are quite vascularized but as long as there is no active bleeding it should be perfectly fine. I would recommend to keep the area clean and put a buster collar on to avoid any licking (if any).

sudden trauma to nail caught when out walking. bleeding stopped quickly. still limping three days later. nothing to see. shall we keep bathing and give pain relief? thanks
Please don't give any over-the-counter pain medications; they can be toxic to dogs at even low doses and giving them will confound your vet's ability to treat the pain with appropriate medications. The reality is that most of these nail injuries end up getting infected, and even if there's no infection they are exquisitely painful. You can compare it to losing your fingernail completely, but then having to walk on the uncovered cuticle. Patch likely needs to have the area numbed and the remaining nail pulled, then have a very soft/cushioning bandage placed, followed by antibiotics and pain medication. Please take him in to see his vet as soon as you can for this.

One of my dogs paws is bleeding a little bit. He fell off the bed this morning and I believe he bent his nail when he hit the ground. It definitely looks sideways compared to the same nail on the other paw. It's only bleeding a little in the one area
I would keep an eye on the area for now given that Hercules is not showing any signs of discomfort when walking and there is only a bit of bleeding. It may be there was a bit of trauma to the nail when he fell but not serious enough to require a vet visit. Should he start limping on that leg, licking that paw a lot, the paw continues to bleed, the paw becomes swollen, red, and/or warm to the touch, the nail becomes cracked in half, he becomes lethargic, or has a loss of appetite, then he will need to see a vet. Last week I noticed Cali limping. Everyday since then he has been attacking his back paw, but the limping stopped. This morning I woke up and found that he bit the nail off and there is some bleeding. What should I do?
Hello, I'd recommend taking Cali to her veterinarian. Limping is a sign of pain, as well as excessive chewing. They will likely want to x-ray her leg and look for signs of infection, a tumor, or another cause for her to be in pain. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

I'm glad to hear that Bently didn't cry or seem bothered by his broken nail. He did get lucky that only the white part of the nail broke and not the quick (the pink/red part with a blood vessel) since that can be quite painful and bloody. There is no risk of significant pain or infection associated with breaking the white part of the nail (similar to how it is if we chip the white part of our fingernails). Since the nail is a bit ragged, there is a chance that it could break or crack further, so I do recommend either very carefully trying to trim the ragged edges or use a dremel tool. If you are uncomfortable trimming Bently's nails, try to take him either to his vet or a groomer today or tomorrow for assistance. Otherwise, there should be no reason for concern! I hope that all goes well! :-)

I think it would be best if you take him to the vet for a wound clean-up, and exam whether there is more than just a stripped nail. Your veterinarian will likely want to bandage the paw and give your dog pain medicine and an antibiotic so that the bacteria in that area cannot cause an infection.

My dog has a swollen paw and is missing the nail but its not bleeding
That definitely sounds pretty painful for Brutis. If you are saying that his entire nail came off, this should probably be assessed. It will be important to make sure that there are no shards left so that it can grow back in properly. Additionally, the veterinarian will be able to provide you with some pain medication and anti inflammatory medication to provide him. Depending on his lifestyle, an antibiotic to prevent secondary infection could also be indicated. If the area is pretty clean right now and it is unlikely to become very dirty, you can try covering it or wrapping the area to prevent it from becoming soiled. At the vet it might also be useful to take an x-ray of the foot to make sure no bones were broken during the event. Hope this helps!

Went running with my dog for a quick 10min run- we've done it before, we got back inside she seemed fine- all I noticed was her licking her paw. When I woke up 4-5 hrs later...I notice her limping when she was walking! One toe is red but not bloody-
Poor Chia - yes she has pulled the hard part of her nail off and the photos show she must be painful as she is holding her foot off the ground. I expect she'll try to lick the area which can make things worse so try to prevent her doing this by putting a sock over her foot, using an e-collar or cone if you have one. For first aid you can apply/ clean the toe by soaking it in a bowl of warm water with a couple of teaspoons of salt in - which is antiseptic. You can cover her foot with a dog shoe or boot which are sold at pet stores. For pain I recommend taking her to see her vet tomorrow. Please do not give her any human pain medicines which can be toxic to dogs. The nail will grow back slowly but the red area will be sensitive and sore for a few days until it dries up.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Devon. Poor boy! Limping means he is in pain, and the fact that he bites you when you try to touch it means he's really hurt. I would take him into a vet now. The vet can sedate him, and can remove the rest of the nail safely. He will also need pain medications and antibiotics, which the vet can prescribe. I recommend taking him into a vet immediately. I hope this helps!
