My dog ate grapes. Should I induce vomiting or call the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | 1 year and 1 month old | 38 lbs

My dog has eaten 3-4 grapes. Should I give him hydrogen peroxide to make him Throw up. Is yes then what amount?

No, I never recommend doing that at home, it's really not safe. There is no known safe amount of grapes for dogs to eat. There is always a possibility of kidney failure. The (major) problem with treating these guys is that you don't know if it's going to cause kidney failure until it's too late. They don't act different or ill until they are life threateningly ill. The only way to treat them is to go to the clinic, make him vomit if it was within an hour or maybe 2, then keep him on IV fluids for a day or two. And some dogs can eat grapes without any problems. We just don't know how each individual will react. So I know that's not the most helpful answer, but that's the more accurate one we have. You can chance it and do nothing and there is a good chance everything will be fine, or you can take him to the clinic immediately for hospitalization. Good luck!

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Soja. I do not recommend including vomiting at home. This is because hydrogen peroxide, which is frequently used at home by owners to induce vomiting, can and does cause gastritis and esophagitis often worse than the initial problem. In addition, given that it's been two hours, it's past the time to induce vomiting. Depending on how many grapes Soja ate, he may be fine. The only problem with grapes is that we don't know the amount needed to cause kidney failure. I would monitor him, and take him into the vet first thing in the morning for baseline blood work to get kidney values. Repeat this blood work in four days to check how his kidneys are functioning. If you see signs such as vomiting, lethargy, weakness, increased or decreased thirst, or increased or decreased urination, take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

I'm glad that your vet recommended that Charlie vomit up the grape that he'd eaten. The biggest challenge with grape ingestion is that there is no known "safe" amount. With this type of potential toxicity, some dogs can experience acute kidney failure after eating just one grape, while others can be perfectly fine after eating a bunch. As far as using hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting, some studies have shown that there can be considerable damage and irritation to the esophagus and stomach due to hydrogen peroxide. Generally, I do not recommend using it for this reason. I understand that it's really challenging to measure and force-feed this substance, so it's really easy to give a little extra. Since Charlie has not stopped vomiting and is acting normally, odds are very good that he'll be absolutely fine. Just keep a close eye on him for changes in his overall demeanor, appetite, vomiting, hard swallowing (gulping not associated with eating or drinking), or any other concerns. If p

Grapes are such a difficult thing to discuss, because we aren’t exactly how many and what kinds are toxic to dogs. Generally, very small amounts aren’t likely to cause any issues. I think it would be a good idea to discuss this with your vet on Monday. Grapes can cause kidney failure, so it might be a good idea to go ahead and check her kidney values on blood work and check a urinalysis as a baseline to monitor for any future changes. Since it has been so long since she could have eaten the grapes, and has already vomited once, I don’t see any reason to induce vomiting again. I have little kids and dogs, I get it, it’s hard to keep them from gobbling up the dropped stuff! When you are serving things like grapes, it would be safest to keep Pepper away from the table. You can have her in a dog kennel, baby gate the eating area, or save the grapes as an outside snack while Pepper stays inside.

This sounds quite serious, and I would take Frost into a vet immediately. The problem with grapes is that we don't know the amount needed to cause kidney failure, and even one or two could potentially cause it. It's concerning he won't eat or drink, and is vomiting everything, and that can be signs of kidney failure . He needs veterinary care now, please take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Hello. 5 grapes may or may not be a problem. We just do not have a threshold as to how many grapes may cause acute kidney failure. I would call your vet or nearest emergency clinic where they will get Miyah to vomit if the ingestion was within the past several hours. Actvated charcoal will be given & I V fluids started to really flush out her kidneys. This is generally continued for 36-72 hours while kidney function is monitored. If there is no kidney damage after 3 days, Miyah will likely remain unaffected. I hope all goes well & thanks for using Boop by Petco.
