Dog tapeworms: How long for Interceptor Plus to work & clean home?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 12.5 lbs

My dog has tapeworms and I just gave him the Interceptor Plus tablet. How long will it be before he’s completely cleared of them? Do they linger on household items such as blankets? Do they stay on the floors and couches and things like that? How will I know when they’re all gone?

This should start working very quickly, but you need to give him another dose in a month to make sure they are all gone. Tapeworms are passed in segments, and they are dead, but you should clean everything in your home to get rid of them.

Yes, the Interceptor Plus will affect adult worms but not larvae that are migrating. Dewormers can cause a"purge" of dead or dying adult intestinal parasites. You should have Rocket dewormed again in 2-3 weeks. Contact your veterinarian for a broad spectrum dewormer to clear emerging adults. Nemex or Panacur can be dispensed by your vet based on your dog's weight.

Interceptor does treat some intestinal parasites such as roundworms and hookworms, so it's possible that this may resolve the problem. If you don't see any improvement in his stool in the next 2-3 days, it would be best to take a fecal sample to your vet for testing - some types of intestinal parasites, such as tapeworms or coccidia, are not covered by Interceptor and would require a separate medication from your vet to treat.

Tapeworm medication is specific, so double check to make sure that the dewormer you used was for tapeworms and not just roundworms and hookworms. It takes up to 7 days for the worms to evacuate out of her system. She can however get re-infected if she eats her own poop, continues to have a flea problem (which is where tapeworms come from) or if she eats another pets poop that has tapeworms. Tapeworms don't have to be retreated in 3 weeks b/c they just come right out and don't have a life cycle like the other worms do (hookworms and roundworms). If she had other worms, then yes she would need another treatment in 2 weeks, not 3. I hope this helps and best wishes with your pet Molly moving forward. Take care!

Hello. Most worms are obtained through the fecal-oral route. Boudreaux ingests something contaminated with fecal material & worms are deposited in his gut, so try to keep him from picking up sticks & debris to chew on. Tapeworms are primarily obtained from fleas. Fleas on your pet's coat feed on tapeworm larvae, your pet feels a flea, grooms it off & swallows the flea & tapeworm. Or, he can pick up tapeworms from hunting & eating small prey. All the house needs is a good vacuuming, & use a good flea product on a regular basis. If you do not use a heartworm preventative, consider using something like Interceptor Plus, which will deworm your pet every month for all the common intestinal parasites. How long does it take/last for Sentinel Spectrum to kill off worms? It has 57 mg of praziquantel, 5.75 mg of Milbemycin Oxime, and 115 mg of Lufenuron.
It should start killing worms within 24 hours. Penny will need another dose of it in two weeks to kill all the worms. This is due to the life cycle of worms. There will be eggs that will not have hatched yet at the time of the first deworming, so another needs to be given in two weeks to kill those when they do hatch. I hope this helps!

How long does it take for Heartgard PLUS to kill roundwords and hookworms in dogs?
Hello, you should expect a die off period of 3-5 days after administration of the medication. Because it is administered orally, most roundworms and hookworms begin to die almost immediately, but it may take up to 3-5 days to have complete clearance of worms. You may recheck a stool sample in 10 days to ensure there are not more parasites noted. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Intestinal parasites are spread in the feces of infected animals so as long as you sister is picking up after her dogs your dogs should be fine. A very good scrub of the house will suffice. Steam mop the hardworking surfaces, and you can steam clean the carpets as well. It's important to remove any fecal material from the home, as that's how tapeworm infection is passed.

Congratulations on your new puppy! I would recommend that she sees veterinarian for a new puppy visit. She will have fecal testing and see if she needs a deworming medication in addition to the Interceptor. She will also be started on her initial vaccines. I suspect the Interceptor tablet you gave is working and killing the intestinal parasites. That is why you are seeing them come out in the stool. You will want to keep her on it each month for the heartworm prevention as well. I hope this information helps!
