My dog keeps licking his mouth. Is something stuck or is he sick?

My dog seems to be annoyed by something in his mouth.. Licking air, for lack of a better term Like trying to get something out of his mouth.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Otis. You are correct that his behavior can signify a problem with his mouth, such as severe dental disease or a broken tooth. There could even be something stuck in his mouth. Another cause is nausea. I'd have him seen by a vet for this, and you should take him into one in the morning. I hope this helps!

Hi and thank you for your question on Boop by Petco! Sight unseen, it is hard to say exactly what the cause of the tongue issue may be, but I certainly provide a few possibilities. Dogs will stick out their tongues or lick their lips with their tongues when they are nauseous. Other times, it can signal a dental infection, periodontal disease or other oral infection. A foreign body like a pieces of twine or twig could be stuck in between his teeth or gums. Lastly, dogs stick their tongues out and report to "lick the air" can be a self soothing behavior- it would be like us tapping our feet or clicking a pen. An exam from your primary care veterinarian can help rule out most of the above possibilities. I would encourage you to take Jack in when you can. Best of luck to you and Jack!

Hi. My dog started licking and swallowing about 2 hours ago. The licking and swallowing has almost stopped...but he's drooling A LOT. Otherwise he is completely fine. Breathing normally, eating and drinking (he eats even if he has an upset tummy).
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is a classic sign of nausea so I do think there is something going on. The question is how serious that is. There are several conditions that may result in nausea such as gastroenteritis, gastrointestinal foreign body, pancreatitis, among many other reasons. We cannot prescribe medications without an actual evaluation of the patient in person. For that reason, if this continues, I would recommend you check in with a veterinarian for an examination and possibly diagnostics. Do not feed him for the next several hours to rest his belly for a bit and see if this goes away on its own. If it persists, consider having him evaluated. Best of luck!

My dog is licking his mouth a lot, stuffy nose
I am sorry to hear that Ace is not himself. Increased Licking and salvation can be signs of nausea. It sounds possible that Ace be have a gastrointestinal infection. I would advise the following; Bland diet of boiled chicken breast and white rice for three days. If diarrhoea or vomiting begin, Ace seems lethargic or in pain, he does not start to improve over tbhe next few days, take him to the veterinarian immediately. My dog is constantly pawing at his mouth. This happens every second. I tried looking at her gums to see if there was any bruises, but, there wasn't any. Please help me with the best answer. Thank?

My dog is 3 years old, he had an episode last night where he was swallowing hard and licking the inside of his mouth excessively, could this be that he has something in his throat or maybe even allergies? Please help
It is definitely possible that Tug had something stuck in his mouth - some food, a stick, some grass or a bone are common things I have found in dogs mouths, so it is worthwhile having a really good look in his mouth and teeth. Another potential reason is that he may have nausea - feeling sick. This can cause dogs lick and swallow more than normal. If this behavior continues, you should take him in to the vet. they may suggest some blood tests for causes of nausea or even an xray if it is suspicous that he has something stuck.

Licking the lips can sometimes be a sign of nervousness, nausea, or even an issue with the teeth or mouth. If he hasn't had a dental cleaning recently, tartar on the teeth or gums could be causing some irritation and thus the licking behavior. Nausea such as from minor GI upset, may also cause drooling, or have signs such as vomiting or diarrhea, but this is not always the case. If it continues or you see any signs of illness/smell bad breath, etc, having your vet take a look is best. If you've changed something in his environment around the time the licking started (new pet, people, items in the house, etc) it could be that he's feeling a bit nervous or uncomfortable as well. Making sure he gets some extra attention and the cause of the nervousness is addressed (IE making sure he has someplace to go rest and hide, using a pheromone diffuser, etc) may help.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! It is likely not a medical condition but behavioral, like OCD, boredom or stress. If this is sudden then I would have him examined and general senior blood work drawn. Provide plenty of activity and toys to chew on. Be sure he can be talked out of the licking and it isn't a seizure. Licking can also be a sign of nausea, so you can try a week of a bland diet and antinausea medications from your Vet to see if it stops the licking. If he checks out fine with the Vet and proving exercise and toys doesn't help you can discuss starting him on anti-anxiety medications. I hope this helps and I wish you the best!

My dog keeps licking and swallowing non-stop. He's eaten and went to the bathroom. His gums look a little pale. Should I take him to the ER tonight or is this something that could wait until the vet opens in the morning? He's about 35 pounds, cocker
Since Biscuit has eaten and gone to the bathroom he should be fine until the morning. Try to get get him to drink more fluids so he doesn't get dehydrated and to soothe his throat. I would put a little chicken broth or bullion in some water to encourage him to drink. You also can add some water to his food. It sounds like he has a sore throat or is coming down with a cold. If he chewed up a toy or bone he may have a throat injury but if it was severe he wouldn't eat. Your veterinarian will examine his mouth and will get him the appropriate medication. Please keep an eye on him tonight and if he should get a lot worse then I would take him in to be checked out. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for Biscuit.

Hello. Constantly licking chops is a sign that either something is stuck in the mouth or throat, a broken tooth or painful mouth, or feeling sick like she will throw up. If she isn't eating, or if she is vomiting or bringing food up after, this is an emergency and you need to go to the vet right away. Otherwise, if she is bright and happy and eating, then you can try a bland diet. Boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breast and boiled rice in small frequent meals is recommended. If this doesn't stop then I would have her checked by your vet and her mouth examined tomorrow morning. Good luck with Daphne.
