Can my vaccinated dog expose my unvaccinated puppy to parvo?

I have two dogs, a 11 week puppy and a 8 month puppy. The oldest has had all her vaccinations, but the oldest has only had his first set. My question is, is it safe to take my oldest to the pet store or a dog park before the youngest is fully vaccinated? Is she likely to track in parvo and get him sick?

Great question! Your oldest puppy cannot get diseases like parvo, but because parvo can live in the environment for months, it is possible she could bring it back. I'd avoid public places until the youngest is fully vaccinated.

Hello, while we can see carrier states with Parvo, generally this is from naturally infected dogs that have survived the virus. It is extremely unlikely that a vaccinated dog will be a carrier of Parvovirus. I think your new puppy will be perfectly safe, as long as you protect the puppy from going anywhere other than your home & yard until he is fully vaccinated at 4 months of age. If your five-year-old dog is up-to-date on all his vaccinations, it is very unlikely that he contracts parvo from your puppy. At this stage your puppy still needs to rest so should not engage in exhaustive play with your older dog, so watch them a little bit so you can slow them down if they get too wild.

No a vaccinated adult dog cannot transmit parvovirus because the parvovirus transmission requires the pet to be actively infected and this only occurs in unvaccinated pets. So no worries with bringing in your puppy. The puppy is not fully vaccinated until 10 days after his/her 3rd set of vaccines. The puppy should remain indoors until such time because it is nearly impossible to eliminate parvovirus from the yard and it can remain viable in the soil for years! Giving your pet a bath before interacting with the puppy is a good preventative measure, especially after the dog returns home from the dog park.

I am currently in the process of adopting 2 boxer puppies. I am currently concerned about my puppies catching parvo from my other dogs. I have a couple other dogs that are have been vaccinated but am worried about a change of my puppy getting parvo.
If your adult dogs are vaccinated and the puppies have started their vaccination series there is minimal risk of getting parvovirus from your dogs. My puppy had parvo virus. If I bring a fully vaccinated dog here, can it infect the new dog? Is there still a risk?
If they new dog is a year old and you are completely sure that that it is 100 percent vaccinated there is a very minimal risk that it will be infected. However, that being said, vaccines are never 100 percent effective so there is always a 0.09 percent chance that the new dog could get the virus. But you should be safe bringing the new dog home. I would make sure that the home environment has been cleaned as thoroughly as possible (this means with bleach to all surfaces) and make sure that the outdoor surfaces have been cleaned as well. Parvo can live in the environment for an annoyingly long time (up to 6 months) so it wouldn't hurt to apply a safe mixture of bleach product to your yard as well. This is probably going completely overboard, but you know how scary parvo can be!

Parvo is spread through the feces of infected dogs. A dog who survives parvo will spread the virus for 6 months in the feces. The virus can survive for 1 year in the soil (though some estimates say 2 years). As long as Lady does not have parvo and no dog with parvo has come into your yard in the last year, you should be safe.

I would not recommend having any dog with parvo or parvo exposure around the5 healthy puppies. parvo is extremely contagious and it can take months for the parvo survivor to stop shedding the virus. Parvo can also live in the environment up to a year. I would not recommend taking these dogs around each other until the health puppies are fully vaccinated. That is distemper/parvo vaccines every 3-4 weeks until they are 16 weeks of age.

First of all the chance that you would transmit parvo through your friend is pretty small, but as your puppy is fully vaccinated you have nothing to worry about, she is fully protected from this viral disease.

Your older dog will only get parvo if 1.) he's not sufficiently vaccinated and 2.) he's exposed to parvo. The puppy needs 3 parvo/distemper combination vaccinations given 3 - 4 weeks apart, starting at least by 8 weeks of age. Your older dog should have had the same series as a puppy - I suggest you review the records given to you by the rescue when you adopted him. Sometimes, we will give an adult dog only 2 parvo/distemper vaccinations to consider them completely protected. So you need to determine your older dog's vaccination history before you can determine whether he (the older dog) would get parvo, if exposed to it. If your older dog is not vaccinated at all he needs to start getting vaccinated right away. The best person to do this is a veterinarian, who can ensure that he is healthy and able to mount an adequate immune response to the vaccination. Both dogs also need rabies shots, and in the US only a license veterinarian can do that.
