Do not comfort Dottie when she is scared. You think you are reassuring her, but you are actually reinforcing the behavior and telling her it's ok to be scared. I would get her in with a professional behavioral expert to deal with this behavior.

Behavior training would be a great way to help her gain confidence. You can look into puppy socialization and obedience classes in your area. I'd also recommend asking any strangers to allow her to approach them, and to offer a treat. Could you give me advice on building my dogs confidence and getting her used to things she's scared of like dogs, people, children, footballs.
Poor Star! It sounds like she's a very anxious girl, if she's afraid of so many things. You can work with her on this by taking tasty treats with you everywhere you go - if she sees something that makes her nervous, praise her and give her a treat. If she wants to move closer to investigate, let her do this - if she would rather move away, that's fine too. It's very important not to force her into situations that scare her or make her uncomfortable, as this will only make the problem worse. You might also want to try a DAP pheromone collar along with a natural calming supplement like Zylkene or Composure to see if this helps. A veterinary behaviorist or a good reward-based trainer would also be very helpful for you, if you feel like you need some hands-on guidance - your vet should be able to refer you to someone in your area who can help, if needed.

I certainly sympathize with your situation. My own 2 year old dog is the same way. The key to training him is to expose him to situations that are not too scary for him, but improve his confidence. This is not a quick or easy process, and will need to be continued long term. I have found the best method to be a desensitization and counter-conditioning system. When Max encounters something that is slightly scary for him (not too overhelming at first), ask him to sit or lie down for a treat. The goal is to get him to do something that he is comfortable with and receive a treat (positive reinforcement) for doing that behavior instead of being afraid. Do not give him any reinforcement (verbal or otherwise) for fearful behavior, but try to ignore it. Instead reward the behavior you want to see. It would be a great idea to have a trainer try to help you start this type of training program, so you might ask your vet for a recommendation on a trainer. I have been using this on my dog

Instead of focusing on the bad things, try to be positive when she does good things to give her more confidence. Doing an obedience class together may help improve your bond and make her feel more secure

I'm sorry to hear that Coco is so frightened of being outside! Unfortunately, what you are describing is very common in dogs that did not receive adequate socialization as young puppies - all pups need to get "out and about" to see the world and have lots of different experiences during their socialization period, which is from 6 to 16 weeks of age. It sounds like Coco didn't get much socialization during this period, which is likely why she is so fearful now. It will be difficult to get her comfortable with the world at this age, but not impossible. You will need to take things very slowly and make sure that being outside is always a fun and positive experience for her - this may mean simply sitting on the porch with her feeding treats or playing with a toy for a few minutes, then taking her back in. You can work up from there as long as she is comfortable. Ideally, it would be best to work with a veterinary behaviorist on this - he/she can evaluate Coco in person and help you p

Poor Oakley! It sounds like he needs a little help with socialization and would benefit from seeing a trainer or veterinary behaviorist in person. You can have a trainer come to your house to observe the situation, and help provide some more tailored advice to help get him feeling more comfortable, especially since he is still so terrified after several weeks. In the meantime, continuing to try and get him adjusted to things may help. Try tossing a favorite treat to him every time you go near him, or placing a favorite treat or chew toy outside of his kennel to encourage him to go out and explore a little. If he does come out, gentle praise and even more special treats can help teach him that what he is doing is OK! If he's startled by loud noises or objects, soothing music can help drown out scary sounds, while letting him sniff and approach new items on his own (and then rewarding him when he does) can help encourage him to explore some. What a cute puppy! I would recommend asking your vet for recommendations for a good trainer or veterinary behaviorist in your area who can work on helping you to socialize your puppy to make her more comfortable in these situations. It may take some work on your part but the pay off will be worth the effort.

Poor pup! One of the most important things to do is not comfort him. While you may think you are helping him by comforting him, you are acting telling him it's ok to react this way and are reinforcing the behavior. I would put him in a quiet dark room of his own to self-soothe, and when it's time to go outside, take him out on a lead. Acting normally, and he should relax following your lead.

Poor Kota! It is possible she wasn't socialized very well as a puppy (mastiffs especially require a lot of socialization with lots of different people, places, and things to help them feel comfortable) and so is still scared from that. It may take a long time with lots of patient practice to help her feel more comfortable. Positive reinforcement with a favorite treat and taking new situations slow (and removing her from the situation if it is too scary and then trying again later) can help. I also highly recommend speaking with a veterinary behaviorist in your area. They are veterinarians trained in both behavior and medicine, and can work with you on a medication and training routine to help reduce Kota's stress and fear and start on positive training to help her relax and adjust. Poor Ariel! Some dogs have anxiety disorders that can cause them to be afraid of normal, everyday things. There are things that can be done to help dogs like this (usually a combination of medication and careful training or behavior modification to help her learn that the world isn't so scary), but I'm afraid there are no "quick fixes" that I can advise you about in a forum like this. Because of this, I would recommend getting in touch with a veterinary behaviorist who can evaluate Ariel in person and help you put together a detailed plan to help her with her anxiety.
