My dog's leg is sore and he's walking awkwardly. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 8 years and 10 months old | 12 lbs

My dog is an 8 yr old small chihuahua roughly around 11 pounds and got his front nail caught in a blanket which caused him to help and tense up a bit. However it seems like his back right leg is sore, and it looks awkward when he walks. Could he have sprained a muscle/have a sore muscle? should I watch him for a few days before taking him to a vet? Also should I ice the leg or perform stretches? He’s seems a bit scared at the moment. This hasn’t happened before so I’m very worried. Thanks.

Poor little Lucky! It could be he has a sore muscle. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.
