Is my dog's vomiting and diarrhea from Tolfedine or Carprofen?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 66 lbs

Hi, my dog was taken to the vet on Friday afternoon. The vet said she had soft tissue damage and was given Tolfedine. On Saturday afternoon I gave her Carprofen as prescribed 100mg. Sunday, she has had diarrhoea and recently started vomiting. Could the medication be making her sick?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Sadie. Poor girl. Yes, it could be due to the medication. Tolfedine causes vomiting and diarrhea, as well as Carprofen. You need to take her into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

This can be a side effect from the medications. I'm particularly worried about the carprofen. We generally recommend discontinuing the use of Carprofen if they are having vomiting and/or diarrhea. It's best to discontinue the Carprofen and Gabapentin for now until you can contact your veterinarian. They will likely want to examine Harley and possibly prescribe some different medications for now. Is it safe to give my dog a carprofen tablet? It was prescribed a while ago for stiff joints and I didn't give her any. She has an upset stomach (had the runs) and seems to have tummy pain.
I am very sorry to hear that Tara is not feeling well. I would not advise going her the carprofen tablet for her stomach upset. Once she has recovered and you notice any signs of arthritis you can give it then certainly. However, carporfen is a type of medication called a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory or NSAIDs. These types of medications can actually cause stomach and gastrointestinal upsets, so should not be used when Tara already has diarrhea. I would advise trying the following at home Bland diet of boiled boneless chicken and steamed rice Skinless sweet potato cooked and mashed for the diarrhoea Probiotic http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=24772 If she does not improve in the next 24 hour, please post again on the forum or take her in for a check-up at the veterinarian.

Without reviewing the full blood results and changes over time it is very difficult to say for sure but if your dog is unwell (especially with increased thirst, vomiting or diarrhea) and blood results are developing more concerning changes then I would be concerned about continuing with carprofen until a conclusion can be reached as to what is causing the chenges in the blood work. Obviously however, Buddy is in pain and shoudl be receiving some pain relief in order to improve his comfort leveles - you shoud speak to your vet about other types of pain relief or deek referral to a specialist

My dog was recently given pain meds for her leg a couple days ago, and after the first few days of taking them she started having diarreah. Im think the meds have something to do with it?
Hi and thank you for your post on Boop by Petco! One of the most common side effects of pain medications used in dogs can be vomiting and/or diarrhea. There can be other causes for diarrhea as well such as parasites, bacterial or viral infections, IBD, food allergy, or organ dysfunction, so I would talk to your veterinarian if the diarrhea becomes more frequent or gets worse. Sometimes plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in the food can help with transient diarrhea. You may try that and see if it gets any better. I would recommend calling your vet. They should be able to prescribe a different pain medication that may not upset her GI tract so much or they can give you medication to help treat the diarrhea and that will help her tolerate the meds better. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Vomiting and diarrhea can occur secondary to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, parasites, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Toffee evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. At the very least they can start him on medications to make him feel better and check his hydration status. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. My 7 lb rat terrier chi mix gets 12.5 mg of Carprofen every 12 hours. She accidentally got another 12.5 mg 3 hours later. She has an enlarged heart and also takes Pimobendin; but doe not have CHF. Will she be ok?
Accidents happen! Fortunately, the carprofen won't impact her heart disease or interact with the pimobendan. However, there is a chance that she could experience some stomach upset with vomiting and/or diarrhea, particularly since this is a pretty big dose for a dog her size. With this kind of dose, the worst case I'd expect to see could be ulceration of the GI tract. Normally, carprofen is prescribed at a dose of 4.4 mg/kg over 24 hours. Today, your dog consumed 7.86 mg/kg. In most cases, we don't see toxicity impacting the kidneys until a dose of 40 mg/kg is ingested. With all of that in mind, your dog should be absolutely fine! In order to be extra cautious, I'd recommend feeding her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days, then gradually mix it in with her normal food over 5-7 days. You can also call your vet to see if they can give a dose for an antacid, like Pepcid. (It's illegal for me to do so without having examined your dog.) If you see any vom

I give my 12 year old Dachshund 25 mg of carprofen on mornings that she has trouble with her back legs. Unbeknownst to me, somebody already gave her 25 MGs of carprofen 4 hours ago and I just gave her another dose of 25. Is there any concern here?
Hi there, and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Fortunately, in my experience, it's very uncommon for a single extra dose of carprofen to cause any significant problems. With NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) overdoses in dogs, the two things we're most concerned about are stomach ulcers and possible kidney damage. These usually occur with doses above 20 mg/kg, which for a 25 pound dog would be about 227 mg. Since Tootsie only got 50 mg total this morning (about 4.4 mg/kg), it's unlikely that you will see any serious issues related to this. To be safe, you should monitor her for the next 24 hours for any signs of a problem, such as vomiting, acting lethargic, or not eating. If you have any concerns, I would recommend taking her to an emergency clinic to be seen.

My dog had a tooth extracted on Friday and was prescribed Rimadyl 75 mg. once a day and Precription Dier I/d food. I gave it to her yesterday and she's been having diarrhea since last night. Should I discontinue the Rimadyl?
Rarely Rimadyl can cause adverse side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, liver issues and kidney issues.Olive's diarrhea may be unrelated but to be safe the Rimadyl likely should be stopped. I would also recommend contacting your veterinarian and be prepared to take her to an ER clinic if the diarrhea worsens or she has any vomiting
