Dog vomiting after heartworm shot, can't keep food down. Vet closed!

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | spayed | 50 lbs

1 1/2 year old golden retriever undergoing heartworm treatment. She is a rescue we acquired 2 months ago. She had her first Diroban shot 60 hours ago. She was fine until 12 hrs ago (48 hrs after the shot) when she began vomiting and continues to not be able to keep anything down. Since this is the weekend we cannot reach our vet. What should we do about the vomiting?

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Your dog appears to be young (under a year) from what I can tell based on the pictures and information you provided. The most likely diseases are as follows: 1. Parvo, a virus that primarily attacks the immune system and intestines of dogs and is very lethal if left without supportive care. 2. Intestinal parasites which can cause intestinal blockage and even anemia (depletion of red blood cells). 3. Other viruses with varying severities. This is not an exhaustive list, just the most common things for a puppy. They will all lead to dehydration and other secondary issues which can all be severe enough to cause death. Whatever the underlying disease, he looks very ill and needs attention from a veterinarian immediately. I would recommend taking him to your nearest emergency veterinary hospital as soon as possible. I hope this helps and your dog gets better!

My dog was given deworming medication this pst Saturday. She was given Pyrantel endoparasite and revolution ectoparasite. Her stools were normal on Sunday. On Monday she didn’t poo at all. And all day Tuesday she was throwing up and pooing diarrhea.
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I am sorry to hear Hazel is vomiting and having diarrhea. Her condition is not normal, and I would recommend following-up with your veterinarian this morning as soon as they open for a reassessment appointment. She may need some labs ran to ensure nothing major is wrong internally which is something for you to discuss with your vet. At a minimum, it is likely she will need anti-nausea medication as well as some medications to help with the diarrhea. If left untreated, she could become very dehydrated which would make her extremely sick. It is much better to get on top of these things before they become a bigger problem. I hope this helps and that Hazel's condition resolves quickly!

Hi, thanks for using a Boop by Petco! Poor Angel! Angel is young and small in size and with severe vomiting and diarrhea there is a big concern for dehydration and low blood sugar regardless of the cause. I recommend that Angel see your Vet today. I hope she has started her puppy vaccines, parvo is a serious disease that causes vomiting and diarrhea. The dewormer can cause vomiting and diarrhea but it should be self limiting. Other causes of vomiting and diarrhea are: worms which we know she has, viral infections like parvo and others, bacterial infections, food allergies/intolerance, dietary indiscretion. It ya best to take Angel to the Vet. I hope this helps and I wish her a speedy recovery!

Hi there! Unfortunately, if she's vomiting and not eating, this isn't likely to be caused by parasites - these are normally signs of a more serious illness. She may have parvo (if she isn't fully vaccinated), an intestinal obstruction due to something she ate, or may have ingested something toxic. I'm afraid a dewormer isn't likely to help her at all - she really needs to be seen by a vet right away. If cost is a concern, you may be able to find a low-cost SPCA clinic in your area that could help. You can also try calling your local shelter to see if they have any resources to assist pet owners with veterinary emergencies or urgent care.

My dog just vomited for 2 times with worm in it then I already dewormed my puppy but she still won't still eat and only drunk a water.
Hi there and thanks for posting on Boop by Petco! Puppies need to be dewormed with a broad spectrum dewormer such as pyrantel several times (3-4 times with each dose being 2 weeks apart from each other) as many puppies are born with roundworms they get from their mother's during pregnancy. It can take a few rounds of dewormer to get rid of them. If Roxy is vomiting up worms, then she likely has a very heavy intestinal worm infection. Sometimes this can cause nausea and inappetence as well. Occasionally, if the worm density is high, they can cause a gastrointestinal obstruction. I would withhold food for a few hours from Roxy to help with the vomiting and take her into see her veterinarian as soon as possible to rule out an obstruction or vomiting/inappetence from other medical cause such as a viral infection. Your veterinarian may recommend Roxy be dewormed a few more times and may send you home with more dewormer for her if nothing more serious is suspected from your vet. I hope

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I would of course follow your veterinarian's recommendations as they were able to examine Chase. However, I would be concerned that other things could also be going on. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include gastrointestinal obstruction and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Chase reevaluated by a veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. At the very least they can address dehydration if present and start him on anti-nausea medications. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for your boy!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! She likely vomited due to the worms however there are other possible reasons. The first thing is determining the specific type of worm that is affecting her so that therapy can be recommended based on that. Walmart does not have any available safe therapy to be used for undiagnosed worms causing vomiting. I recommend you visit a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to diagnose the specific cause of the vomiting and recommend accordingly. Best of luck!
