My cat has dark vaginal discharge, gaining weight. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 20 lbs

My cat has a thick, dark discharge from her vaginal area and eats frequently along with significant weight gain. Her behavior has not changed, she’s eating and drinking water, playful, sleeps during the day and up most of the night. I’m concerned and wondering what this could be?

I'm wondering if this discharge is around the vulva and not truly coming from the vagina - if so she could have irritation or her vulva from folds of skin, or allergies that are causing secondary infections. If the discharge is truly from her vagina it could be more serious, and a sign of an infection of her cervix or a urinary infection. I would definitely recommend seeing your veterinarian for this problem even though she seems to be acting fine otherwise.
