My dog's cherry eye surgery failed. How to treat it without dry eye?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Neapolitan Mastiff | Male | unneutered | 1 year old

Hi my vet had performed surgical technique (pocket technique) to treat cherry eye but it was a complete failure. He has performed that technique 2 times by now but cherry comes after the other day of operation. And he says that it is not safe to remove cherry eye as it will cause dryness of eye . Can you recommend me some technique to remove cherry eye without affecting tear gland. My dog is suffering from cherry eye from past 6 months Please help me

I suggest you just have the tear gland removed. That is why I almost never do the pocket technique as it has a high rate of failure. I have removed many glands and have never had one come back with dry eye later. If he does happen to get dry eye later in life there is medications that can be used to control it. It is not the end of the world. I would just remove the gland and be done with it.
