My dog has a lump after spay surgery. Is it urgent or normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Italian Greyhound | Female | spayed | 4 months and 27 days old | 9 lbs

I took my Italian greyhound to the vet for a spade and the procedure appeared to be done very poorly. It’s been a week and my puppy has a major protrusion right in the surgical area. Should I take her to another vet? How urgent is this issue?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It doesn’t look like the surgery went bad it looks like you are seeing some swelling around the suture knot under the skin. It isn’t urgent but I would take her back to the vet that did the surgery to confirm the swelling. If it is the knot, once the suture dissolves the swelling will go away. Good luck and kisses to Harriet!
