My dog has a large lump near his back leg. What is it? Should I worry?

It could be a small pustule, cyst, or mass. The only way to know the exact cause is to have your vet do a needle aspirate. It would be a good idea to have your vet take a look at it at some point. He may need an antibiotic, it may need to be removed, or your vet may just want to monitor the lump for growth or changes.

In general I do recommend seeing the vet for a skin growth or lump. If the lump is very red, painful or if there is discharge I would recommend seeing your vet as soon as you can - these could be signs of something like an abscess. If the lump is large it would be a good idea to see a vet soon as well - if it is something that needs to be removed and it is near the foot the larger the growth is the more difficult it can be to remove. Otherwise you should probably plan to have your vet take a look in the next few weeks.

You are correct that lipomas generally grow very slowly. I recommend to have Jackson examined today. A rapidly growing bump is worrisome for an abscess, a foreign body reaction, an infected cyst or an aggressive cancer. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. I'd recommend having Jake seen by a vet tomorrow to have the lump examined and diagnose so it can be treated as needed.

This lump/bump/growth should be ideally examined by your local vet to have a diagnosis established.
