New adopted dog, no records or microchip. What's next for health?

Start by taking him straight to the vet! They will probably check for intestinal parasites and give the first round of all vaccinations as if he has never received any. Then he should only need to have one set of boosters 3-4 weeks later.

I would recommend getting his vaccinations redone if there is no proof. It will not harm him and this will ensure he is fully protected. It is just too risky to assume he is protected with no proof. He will need the DHLPP and Bordetella. He will then need 1 booster done in 3 weeks and that will fully protect him for a year. I hope that your newly adopted pet Tanner does well moving forward. Thank you for submitting your question. The core vaccines for all dogs typically include the distemper-parvo combination, rabies and bordetella. Depending on your location and lifestyle, leptospirosis and influenza may be recommended as well. Without knowing prior vaccination history, some vaccines will require a booster in 3-4 weeks. It is wise to have fecal testing and deworming performed in newly acquired pets. They should be started on heartworm prevention as well as a flea and tick preventive. I hope this information helps!

I would not rely upon this person having given the vaccines properly nor that the feed store kept the so-called cooling chain, ie that the vaccine did not get warm somewhere along the way and became useless. I suggest you start from the beginning. Take your dog to your vet for a basic exam to make sure she is healthy, and have her vaccinated as per recommendation of your vet. Also discuss having her spayed if you do not want to breed her.

If you do not have any records the Vet will determine how many DHPP vaccines she will need to protect her. It is in her best interest to receive the vaccines even if she had they before. The Rabies vaccine can be given in most state between 12-16 weeks of age. Your Vet will likely deworm her and get her on a good flea/tick and heartworm prevention. She is cuter cute and thank you for adopted a puppy that sounds like really needed your help! I think getting her up to date on vaccines and checking her hesrtworm status is a good start. Eventually I would have her fecal checked to ensure she doesn’t have any worms and also have a vet do an exam on her. The vet will be able to determine that she is otherwise healthy and also be able to tell you whether or not she needs her teeth cleaned. Good dental health is important because it helps to increase their lifespan. If left untreated long term, the bacteria from the mouth can cause problems to her heart, liver and kidneys. Congratulations on adopting Rico! Since he has not yet had vaccines, you can start from square one. Rico should be examined by a veterinarian to evaluate his overall health and can then begin his vaccine series. He will need two DAPP (distemper-adenovirus-parvovirus-parainfluenza) vaccines spaced 3-4 weeks apart, as well as a rabies vaccine. In most areas of the country, it is often recommended to being a series of leptospirosis vaccines as well. In Lyme disease endemic areas, Lyme vaccines are often given. If Rico will be going to kennels, doggy daycare or dog parks, you can also discuss canine influenza and bordetella (kennel cough) vaccines with his vet.

The vet will perform a thorough exam to make sure she is healthy, check her for a microchip (which is linked to a dog's owner), and will likely deworm her and give her some vaccines. Most dogs receive a rabies vaccine and combination vaccine that includes common viruses that dogs are exposed to. The vet will also walk you through monthly flea, tick, and heartworm control and likely be able to tell if Fifi is spayed and an estimate of her age. Your dog will need several vaccines. Most veterinarians give a yearly combo vaccine that includes distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza, and Corona (DHPPC). He will also need his Rabies vaccine. Rabies can now be given every three years after the initial 1 year vaccine. Other vaccines that I recommend are Canine Bordetella vacine (kennel cough) that is given every 6 or 12 months, and a Leptospirosis vaccine (this vaccine can be added to the combo vaccine or given alone). If your veterinarian offers a Lymes disease vaccine (probably means lymes is prevelant in your area), it would be a good idea to get that one as well.
