Why does my cat keep bringing one kitten to my bed? Is she worried?

Hello and thank your for contacting Boop by Petco. I do not think that there is anything to worry about. It does sound to be a coincident that she keeps bringing that particular kitten to you. As long as Jade is looking after all her kittens and they are feeding well, passing normal stools and urine and the energy level is normal, you just need to monitor the mum and kittens.

It is ok that she is bringing them to you. They often move them to keep the safe and protect them. As long as she lays with them to keep them warm and fed it is fine. I would however take them off the bed and keep them on level ground because they can migrate and crawl and we do not want them falling off. They can begin to be weaned between 4-6 weeks of age

Mino is super proud of showing off her kittens to you. Obviously she trusts you 100% and think that she wants to raise her babies in HER colony and you are part of the colony. Cats often share the care of their babies with other cats. SO I am afraid you are going to have to put a box into your bed room where she can be with you and her babies. If she already has a box where she suckles her babies, then just move that one. Cat mamas are very very clean and there will be no smell or dirt, and the only thing you may hear at night will be purring....that in itself is a wonderful way of falling asleep. I hope this helps. Oh, and make sure you feed her kitten food so she has the best milk available for her babies, and talk to her a lot praising her and telling her how nice her babies are.

There are a few possibilities: One, she is a new mother and is feeling a bit overwhelmed or doesn't know what to do with an entire litter, so she is just trying to move a single kitten with her. Two, there may be something wrong with the other kittens such as a deformity, etc, as some cats will try to push away or stop caring for these kittens if they sense something is wrong. Three, she will eventually move ALL the kittens, she is just trying to find a place that she feels safe and comfortable in before she does so. Making sure she has a nice cozy and private place to house her kittens may help her feel more comfortable. You may also need to start helping out and supplementing feeding for any kittens she is pushing away or is having trouble nursing. If any kitten or momma cat seems ill or aren't thriving, bringing them into your vet for an exam to rule out any illness or genetic issues is best.

Unfortunately, when a momma cat feels someplace is safe, she'll be pretty adamant about bringing her kittens there! Apparently, the bed, and you are her safe spot. You may try making a "nest" for her out of pillows or a blanket from your bed and placing it next to the bed so it smells safe like you, but you can't crush it. You can also try making a pillow "wall" to keep yourself separated from the babies as well if you roll over in the night. Otherwise, just trying to make someplace else more enticing should encourage her to move them again.

Sometimes mamas will separate a puppy that is not doing well, so if this puppy seems smaller than the others or isn’t eating as well I’d recommend having it examined by your vet. It could also be a behavior quirk of hers, sonif the puppy seems normal otherwise I wouldn’t worry too much.

Cats commonly want to pick up their kittens and move them to "safety". My guess is that, left unattended, she would move all of them one at a time. Consider moving her basket/box to a more secluded area (under a coffee table, in a small closet, etc). This might appease her concern for her kittens. As for the eye goop, keep an eye on this. If you need to, gently wipe it with a warm damp cloth on a daily basis. This could be nothing or it could be an early viral infection. If you see snotty noses, reluctance to eat, or any other concerning signs, see the vet. You can start mom on a lysine supplement (we think this helps interrupt replication of the feline herpes virus.) It is concerning that Belle has moved only one kitten into a different location, and I would recommend trying to keep her and all of the kittens together in an area where they can be more easily supervised. If the kitten in the closet seems sick (if it is crying frequently, less active than it's littermates, having difficulty breathing, or if it seems cold) I would recommend seeing a veterinarian right away. While it can be difficult to determine what is wrong with very young kittens, sometimes aggressive supportive care can be successful so I wouldn't necessarily say that the kitten won't survive simply because Belle seems to be paying less attention to it.

The kitten all need to be kept together. If she had too many people bothering her yesterday, she may be trying to move the kittens to a new place. Try to put the kittens back with her, other than that try to minimize handling and disturbing her, while still keeping an eye on them. If she is not nursing all of them or keeps rejecting some, then you may need to intervene and bottle feed some of the babies. Limit allowing other people to visit Copernic and babies.

This is a very concerning finding, if the mother is actively taking the kitten away from the others she may feel this kitten is unwell and may be putting the other kittens at risk. I wold recommend a vet check for the kitten and mother to rule out any signs of infection and it may be worthwhile trying to bottle feed the kitten if rejected by the mother but success rate is quite poor if the kitten is unwell
