My young ferret has bloody, yellow, or mucousy stool. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Ferret | Male | neutered | 1lb

My ferret recently has had weird looking stool. They do run around the house all evening so there's a possibility they could have eaten something they shouldn't have. The stool almost looks bloody on the top but kind of yellowish in the middle. It also is kind of mucousy. They are under 6 months. They are acting fine. They do drink a lot of water but they have since we got them. They are acting normal, playful etc. No other signs of illness. Also some of their other stool is dark and mucousy.

Thanks for reaching out about Atlas and including photos. If you believe there could be blood in the stool, a veterinary visit is highly recommended. Ingested foreign bodies are common and easier to deal with early on in the process, then after they are debilitated. Ferrets should not be allowed to run around unsupervised as this is a common occurrence. The latin name for ferrets is Mustella furo putro or the "stinky thief". Monitor closely for appetite, straining to defecate or indication of pain, as these should be considered a veterinary emergency and not wait until the next day. Good luck.
