My dog licked onion sauce and threw up. Should I take her to ER?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 6 years old | 50 lbs

My dog licked a spatula that had a sauce that contained onion in it (7 oz mixture with 4 tablespoons of scallion and half a clove of garlic blended in a food processor). She threw up about 20 minutes after consuming the sauce. We are planning to call our vet on Monday (they are not open tonight or tomorrow). Should we bring her to the ER asap or is that small amount of concentration not harmful?

Just a lick shouldn't cause problems, and it's likely that Koda threw up because the sauce upset her stomach. I'd keep an eye on her for now. If she keeps throwing up, becomes lethargic, or has a loss of appetite, take her into a vet immediately.
