My dog licked onion sauce and threw up. Should I take her to ER?

Such a small amount of onion is unlikely to cause any toxic effect (linked to anemia and weakness after a few days) - it may be hamburger meat or other rich food which has triggered the vomiting. I would recommend giving oral rehydration fluids (pedialyte) and feeding small but frequent meals of a very low fat, bland diet such as boiled skinless chicken, brown rice and canned pumpkin (or canned specialist intestinal low fat diet). If symptoms persist a full vet check would be required

Oh no! I don't think any of those ingredients would be toxic. The salsa probably has some onions in it but I doubt there would be enough to be a concern. If Cassidy continues to vomit it would be a good idea to see an emergency veterinarian but otherwise I'd think it would be okay to monitor him.

Yes, I would take her in so you can get some medications to get her feeling better. In all likelihood she is going to be OK, but without the appropriate medications she may be feeling very under the weather for a long period of time. Hope this helps. I would also be prepared to tell your veterinarian about all the different ingredients in the sauce so they can make sure nothing extraordinarily toxic was ingested.

Hi there! As long as Nova is acting normal, I wouldn't be concerned. It's likely that he threw up the packet because it couldn't be digested and was causing some irritation to his stomach. I'm not sure what specific kind of packet it was (ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc.?) but most common condiments are not toxic to dogs and should not cause any serious problems.

In the morning, feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

While onion and garlic are toxic to dogs, their toxicity is dose-dependent so a small amount of fish flavored with a little onion and garlic would most likely not contain enough to be toxic, unless the dish was really loaded with onions/garlic. Onions and garlic cause destruction of red blood cells and anemia, which would cause a dog to be lethargic with pale gums. If Sady is sick and vomiting today, I suspect it's more likely GI upset from getting something different from her normal diet, rather than being directly related to the onions & garlic. She would feel better fastest if you took her to the vet and got something to calm her GI tract down, but if she's otherwise acting pretty normal you could try offering her small amounts of bland food today such as boiled lowfat chicken breast and white rice, and if she's still vomiting tomorrow then have her seen by your vet. This may cause some GI upset which may result in vomiting and/or diarrhea. If it is limited to a couple of bouts and she's back to normal in 12 hours or so, you don't need to worry. Just keep an eye on her for the next 12-24 hours, and if she develops vomiting or diarrhea that is severe or continuous, or if she becomes increasingly lethargic, seek emergency care.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Ketchup is not toxic to dogs so I do not think the vomiting or diarrhea is coming from eating that. If she is still vomiting and having diarrhea after 24 hours, I recommend taking her to a vet to find out what is going on internally. She could have parasites or have eaten something else to cause the intestinal upset. If the vomiting and diarrhea continues she will need medication to stop both and fluids to prevent dehydration.
