My dog ate too much, now bloated with gurgling tummy. Should I worry?

Pet's info: Dog | Brussels Griffon | Male | neutered | 4 years and 3 months old | 13 lbs
I got home and found my dog had gotten into his dog food, are much more than his usual 1/4 cup and drank all his water. He’s really bloated and has a very gurgling tummy. He pooped three times so far But seems to be acting normal. Is there anything I can do to help him?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Alfie. Poor boy. It's good that he's acting normally, so it doesn't sound like he has bloat. I'd without food for tonight, and keep a close eye on him. If you see pacing, anxiety, restlessness, trying to vomit but can't, and excessive drooling, take him into an ER vet right away. Otherwise, feed him his normal breakfast in the morning. I hope this helps!

Yes, if he had something like bloat, you would see pacing, restlessness, excessive drooling, and attempting to vomit but unable to do. If he had something like pancreatitis, which can happen when a dog eats fatty food, you would see abdominal pain, hunched over position, and vomiting. If you see any of those signs, have him seen by a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. Abdominal distension can be due to organ enlargement, such as a full stomach, ie. if Remi ate a lot of food recently. Other options include fluid within the abdomen, which would be less common in a younger puppy. As long as Remi isn't acting abnormally, i.e. no vomiting or retching, no diarrhea, or excessive lethargy, I recommend monitoring him tonight. If he still seems bloated in the morning or isn't acting himself, he should be seen by a veterinarian. Your vet may recommend x-rays to look at his stomach and other organs. I hope this is helpful!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! It sounds like Minka is experiencing a simple food bloat (stomach is big and full of food). I recommend NOT feeding her until tomorrow, only small sips of water and walk her every 2-4 hours until bedtime. If she starts non-productively retching, appears restless or painful, pacing, won't lie down then she should go to the closest emergency room. If none of those things happen then she should be fine. If he stomach looks normal size tomorrow morning then resume her normal feeding schedule with her normal food. Good luck!

Hello! This is what we call "food bloat" which happens when dogs manage to eat a massive amount of food! Their stomachs stretch with the huge amount of food, causing the bloated bellies.
When people bring these pets to me, we usually recommend putting them on IV fluids until the bloating resolves, and not feeding at all. Their stomachs could potentially rupture, when the kibbles swell, and mix with water.
So, at this point, I wouldn't suggest feeding them.
Ideally they should be checked by their vet, to see if they are okay recovering at home, or whether they need treatment at the clinic.

If she is resting quietly, not vomiting, and having no breathing issues then she is probably fine for you to just monitor her now. I strongly suggest you don't feed her anything for 24 hours but make sure she has plenty of water available to drink. If she is having any troubles then she needs to go to the emergency vet. He may be over eating at times. He may need a diet change to something for a sensitive stomach that is easier to digest for him. Since he is acting normal, with a good appetite and no vomiting or diarrhea, you can try a sensitive stomach formula food or a limited ingredient food to see if that makes a difference. You should monitor his weight weekly to make sure there are no sudden changes as that can indication fluid build up from intestinal or heart disease. If you notice any vomiting or diarrhea, or the weight is consistently increasing with the bloating, then he should be seen by a vet.

HI, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Rocky! I understand your concern! The symptoms you are describing are not one of a GDV expect the bloated stomach. Animals with a GDV do not eat, are uncomfortable, pace, pant and non-productively retch. I would take him to the Vet for an exam and an X-ray. There are other causes for a bloated stomach, sadly most commonly liver or spleen tumors. They can bleed causing lethargy and slower walking. Hopefully it's just from eating too much food! Hello, thank you for your question about Walter. Based on the symptoms that you are describing I suspect that Walter is experiencing some mild stomach upset or indigestion. Since he is otherwise acting normal I would recommend continuing to monitor him for the next 24 hours. If at any time he develops any vomiting, diarrhea, or lack or appetite I would recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian. Hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. It sounds as though Scooby has a bit of food bloat. I would fast him for 24 hours and let him digest the donuts he ate. He may develop dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, etc. If he begins to vomit and become lethargic, then I would take him in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate treatments recommendations can be made. Hello. It is good that Twizzler is sleeping quietly. As long as he remains comfortable with no signs of GI distress, then he will digest his super meal. If he should develop any retching, gagging, vomiting or diarrhea, please see your veterinarian, but most of the food should move out by morning. Thank you.
