My dog's eyelid growth is bleeding. Should I take her to the vet?

It is possible there is an abscess (infection) going on, a blocked tear duct, a wound, or even a cyst or growth that needs to be looked at and treated. I'd try applying a warm compress to it five minutes a day a couple times a day to see if that helps open it up and drain. Hi there and thanks for your post. There is a growth on the upper part of Riley's right eyelid. Many times, these growths are slow growing and typically will not cause a problem unless they become larger. When they do become larger, they can rub up against the cornea of the eye and cause eye irritation and infection which can cause the eye to become red like it is. At this point, it may be recommended to have the growth removed to prevent further eye irritation. I would recommend Riley see her primary care vet soon to have her eye evaluated. Your veterinarian will likely stain the eye to check for a corneal ulcer and may perscribe certain eye medications to help decrease inflammation. It may be advised by Riley's primary care vet to have this growth removed soon and this can most likely be scheduled with them for a later date at the time of the appointment. It appears she has black eye. It is safest to have her check by a vet to make sure there are no scratches on the eye and it can still close completely to prevent a dry eye. They may also be able to prescribe pain medication

I am sorry to hear about your puppy. If the eyeball itself is bleeding that would be considered an emergency and you should seek urgent veterinary care. If the eyelid is bleeding but the wound is small, then you can try cleaning it with a mild soap (as long as the soap isn't going to get on the eyeball itself. Holding a clean cloth over the area and applying gentle pressure may help stop the bleeding. If the bleeding will not stop after applying gentle pressure then you should seek veterinary care. If the wound is deep/gaping it may require sutures or an antibiotic and you should bring Jessi to the vet as well.

It could be a stye, but that is quite large. This is something that I feel needs to be checked out by a vet so it can be treated correctly. I would take Harley into the vet in the morning. Best of luck.

Ouch! I would have the growth checked out by your vet to figure out what it is and get it treated. Until you can get to the vet, you can place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Max to keep him from pawing at it and making it more irritated. You can also use a clean washcloth to gently remove any debris if there is buildup. If the area becomes rapidly worse, or is very bothersome to Max, having it seen sooner is best.

This looks suspicious of a meibomian cyst-a cyst including a small gland around the eyelid. Many times they will "rupture" on their own but will regrow in the same area after this happens. I always recommend removal as they can become quite large and irritate the eye of he affected animal. If they are not surgically removed by your vet-normally part of the cyst remains and refills. Cherry eye is a disorder of the tear gland and can become infected which can cause it to bleed. Your veterinarian may recommend antibiotics or steroids for the eye temporarily. Ultimately, corrective surgery is often needed for cherry eye which can be done by your veterinarian.
