My dog fought a raccoon weeks ago. Why is he breathing fast and losing weight?

That's not good! Zeus could be in pain or have a severe illness. My big concern here is the breathing issues, as that can lead to respiratory distress. I think it's best he sees a vet now. In Raley's case, it sounds like her kennel cough could be turning into pneumonia. She will need a good exam, and radiographs. That is most likely the issue and a common occurrence in severe kennel cough cases. Unfortunately another possibility we have to keep in the back of our mind, although rare, would be distemper virus. Distemper is a virus that affects a dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, respiratory and central nervous systems, as well as the conjunctival membranes of the eye. The signs of canine distemper can include sneezing, coughing and thick mucus coming from the eyes and nose. This is a medical emergency, and Zeus has to see a vet now. It sounds like he was injured in this scuffle, and he will be in a lot of pain leading him to be lethargic, and not eat or drinking. I would recommend taking her to an emergency clinic tonight to be seen. The veterinarian there can examine her, listen to her heart and lungs, palpate her abdomen, and may recommend x-rays or other testing if needed to help determine what's wrong.

From this description, I'm worried about a heart murmur. An heart murmur is turbulent blood flow in the heart and if it's severe enough you can actually hear it or feel it from the outside. This can lead to congestive heart failure. I would recommend scheduling a vet appointment tomorrow morning, or going to an emergency clinic if he is breathing rapidly (more than 30 breaths a minute while resting) very lethargic, or his gums look pale. If he is stil breathing rapidly and acting abnormal than he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. He could have an infection and your vet can take an x-ray to evaluate his heart and lungs and then prescribe medication to treat. He might need an antibiotic or other medications, depending on the diagnosis.
