Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 15 days old | 70 lbs

My dog has diarrhea. She is eating normally, isn't showing any signs of pain, she is playful and being normal. She threw up once on Monday and there was a piece of plastic in her puke. But has not puked since. She has had diarrhea since Tuesday night. What should I do to help her?

As long as she is behaving normally otherwise, you can manage the diarrhea at home. Withhold food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food and gradually increase the amount every hour as long as there is no vomiting. Feed bland until the stool is normal, then transition slowly to Athena's regular diet. Symptoms to monitor for include persistent vomiting or diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. See your veterinarian if any of these symptoms are noted.
