My dog has a bump on his hind leg. Is it a tick? He's acting lazy.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Thanks for the picture! It looks like an engorged tick. Gently lift it up and if you see 8 legs then it is a tick. Pull it gently off the skin where the head attaches to the skin or you can have your Vet for Vet tech remove it for you. I would change the brand of tick prevention you are using or start using one. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. It looks like a skin growth. I don't think it is a tick or any other skin parasite. Ticks feed on dogs for 3-4 days and then fall off. If this lump has been there for a few months it cannot be a tick or any other bug. Skin growths like this are common in older dogs. They are usually benign and not dangerous, but please show it to your vet the next time you take Lily in for an appointment.

It looks like what we call sebaceous adenomas, basically a benign mass of the glands in the skin. This is not a tick and I would not be alarmed by this. If it continues to grow in size, drastically change in appearance or all of a sudden it is bothering him, I would have a veterinarian examined him to perform additional tests on this Mass to ensure it is nothing to be concerned about. That doesn't appear to be a tick. It looks like it could be a tiny mass on or under the skin. Keep an eye on it for any rapid change or growth, redness or discomfort. Continue to offer food in small, frequent amounts. Mix in the pumpkin (NOT pie filling) as you've been doing. As long as he is behaving normally and the stool is firming up, you can monitor him at home. If the diarrhea persists or the bump changes then have him seen by your veterinarian.

Hi and thanks for posting on Boop by Petco! It is hard to say exactly what the cause of the bump may be without examining Lilly first. It may be from a tick bite or could be a small mass such as a cyst. From the picture, it does not appear to be a tick. Trifexis does not cover ticks. You may consider placing Lilly on another product that covers ticks. Currently there is no one product that covers heart worms, fleas, and all 4 types of ticks. I would recommend NexGard or Simparica that covers fleas and ticks very well in addition to her regular monthly heart worm preventative. I would keep an eye on the bump, however. If it gets larger or you notice any discharge or redness, I would take Lilly into her veterinarian to have it evaluated. I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Ghost. I suspect that he had a tick on him. I recommend that he starts a topical flea and tick. Vectra 3D is a great choice as it treats a wide range of external pests. Frontline Plus is also another effective product. Ticks can spread diseases, so it is best for him to see his veterinarian. The only thing I can't tell from the picture is where the skin bump is located on Arny's body. If it is on his belly it could be an irregular nipple. Otherwise to me it doesn't appear to be a tick. Skin tags are more dangly. It looks like a dermal (on top of the skin) bump. There are many types of skin bumps that can affect dogs- a lot are harmless: skin tags, hair follicle cysts, sebaceous adenomas, etc. And some are more concerning. Sadly a lot of the time we can't tell from just looking at them. If it suddenly appeared or grows rapidly, having it aspirated by your Veterinarian can give you a better idea of what it might be. An aspirate is a quick procedure where your vet uses a needle and syringe to suck cells from the bump. Then slides are usually sent to the lab for a pathologist to look at.
