My dog had puppies. Why is she shivering and has diarrhea?

Diarrhea and lethargy can be signs of a serious infection, parvovirus, in young puppies. Additionally puppies can become dehydrated and have low body temperature very rapidly. It is difficult to pinpoint a diagnosis based on these symptoms alone, but some possibilities include pain from an injury, or abdominal pain such as pancreatitis or a gastrointestinal foreign body. I would definitely recommend getting her seen by a vet within the next 24 hours. They can perform a full physical exam to pinpoint any areas of pain, and may recommend blood work or x-rays to help reach a diagnosis. At minimum, they can offer medication for pain, and constipation if present. In the meantime, I would try offering Luna small, frequent meals of a bland diet such as boiled chicken and plain white rice. Also monitor for any vomiting or diarrhea, or any particular areas on her body that seem painful when touched. These will be important pieces of information to provide to the vet when you see them. Hello. As long as Lola is eating & drinking fairly well, nursing the puppies & seeming to be contented, she should be well. If you have not wormed her in the past few months, I would definitely take a stool sample to your veterinarian now to make sure she will not be passing any parasites to her puppies. Because some parasites are inevitable in puppies, & based on what & if your vet sees anything in the stool, you will need to start administering a wormer to the puppies starting at 2 weeks of age. We use pyrantel pamoate every 2 weeks until 8 weeks, then monthly until the pups are 6 months of age. Thanks for contacting Boop by Petco.

It could be that Anime has a postpartum infection such as mastitis. She could also have a severe GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, or a foreign body. I would take her into a vet asap to get checked out.

I'm sorry to hear Lola isn't feeling well. There are multiple reasons Lola could be vomiting and having diarrhea, such as pancreatitis (an inflammation of the pancreas), intestinal parasites, gastroenteritis (an upset GI system), dietary indiscretion or something possibly stuck in her intestines. I would have Lola evaluated by her regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for her GI signs, have any diagnostics done (X-rays, fecal screening) and any treatment that may be necessary to get her feeling better.

Diarrhea does indicate a problem such as stomach upset, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or a GI illness. I can give you a home remedy for Luna to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she refuses to eat the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Oh my, I've very concerned about Luna! I would be very worried she could have parvovirus, which is a deadly disease of young unvaccinated puppies. It is also highly contagious, and if her brother is sick as well, it's possible that he could have parvo. Luna needs to see a vet immediately. There is no cure for parvovirus, but supportive treatment from the vet is the best chance of survival. In the future, it is never recommend to take a puppy out in public until they are fully vaccinated to prevent them from getting highly contagious and deadly diseases such as parvo and distemper. I would be concerned that the diarrhea could be caused by intestinal parasites, a viral infection like distemper or parvo, or even a change in diet. The fact that she is so lethargic and won't eat concerns me. I would talk to your vet about doing a fecal, blood work and a parvo test if available. Try feeding several small meals per day rather than one or two large meals. Once her diarrhea improves you can start adding back in her regular food. When she is feeling better she is due for her first set of puppy vaccinations, and this will need to be repeated at 12 and 16 weeks of age. I hope she is feeling better soon.
