My dog has bloody soft poop and a swollen anus. Should I call vet?

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Litl Bit! It sounds as though she had an anal gland abscess that ruptured. If the bleeding is coming from a small opening next to her anus that is what it looks like. Before it ruptures there can be a swelling next to the anus then it pops and blood and pus comes out. She should wear an E-collar and you can clean the area if she lets you. Warm compress it twice today. Make an appointment first thing tomorrow with your Vet so they can express the anal glands and start her on antibiotics and pain medications. I hope this helps!

Your dog should definitely get checked out by a vet. A lump near the anus could be an issue with an anal gland, anal fistula, or a tumor. The vet will do a thorough exam and can discuss additional diagnostics needed to determine what is going on.

If her feaces were hard, it could be that the blood is from straining to pass the poo. Maybe feaces were harder because of vomiting and being slightly dehydrated. As you say, she probably senses the move and the stress, I would recommend to monitor her for the time being but see a vet if blood persisting or if worried.

You can see some swelling after expression of the anal sacs. Given that Sofia is pooping fine, I would just keep an eye on her for now. If this swelling continues over the next few days, gets worse, or she starts having problems pooping, then I would be concerned and have her seen by a vet again.

It sounds like your dog has a rectal polyp. This fleshy bit of tissue is likely what is causing the blood you are seeing in the stool. If the treatment your vet prescribed is not working Jaz may need surgery to remove the polyp. Some vets feel comfortable performing this surgery while others may refer you to a specialist for surgery or endoscopy. I would recommend speaking with your vet about a possible referral to have the polyp removed.
