My dog has bloody soft poop and a swollen anus. Should I call vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 45 lbs

Elsie had stool ( with material in it) pertruding from her anus, that she finally went outside and pooped out. There appeared to be a small amount of bright red blood in a piece of it, and it was soft stool. Now her anus appears inflamed or swollen in the middle. She is still licking at it a bit. Eating, drinking, and acting normal otherwise. Any ideas? What should I watch for and when should I call the vet?

Poor Elsie. She may have eaten something causing trouble pooping and the bit of blood. I'd keep an eye on her for now. If she keeps pooping blood, her anus gets more swollen, she keeps licking at it, she stops eating, or becomes very lethargic, then I would take her into a vet.
