My dog has a lump, white poop, and straining. When to see a vet?

I would be concerned that this lump could be a malignant tumor, and it's clearly bothering Chloe if she won't let you touch it. I would take her into a vet now to get this checked out. Best of luck.

Poor Maggie! This diarrhea could be caused by hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, GI tumors, GI ulcers, intestinal parasites, toxic exposure, or severe GI disease. Given that she has had uncontrollable diarrhea for a few days now and there is blood in her stool, the time has passed to try a home remedy and she should see a vet right away. The vet can diagnose what is causing her diarrhea, and can treat her for it. As for the lump, it could be a cyst, an abscess, a lipoma, a benign tumor, or a malignant tumor. Any suspicious lump should be examined by a vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. While being examined for her diarrhea, Maggie can have her lump examined and diagnosed as well.

Poor guy. The hard lump is hard to say what it is without a photo. It could be a condition called folliculitis or even a pustule (infected pocket). However, with bloody diarrhea, I would highly recommend taking Merlo in to your vet to get him examined and stool tested. Lots of things can cause loose bloody stool including: parvovirus infection, pancreatitis (usually causes vomiting as well and decreased appetite), stress colitis, etc. Once Merlo is examined, the vet will likely put him on a short course of antibiotics and probiotics at the very least for the loose stool. I would recommend that Linda see a vet. The lump may or may not be related to her other signs but vomitting and diarrhea with lethargy can become serious quickly in small breed dogs. Blood in her stool and brown vomitus indicates bleeding in her GI tract so she may be at risk of anemia as well as dehydration. She should be seen asap if she is still vomitting or lethargic and depressed. And mammary cancer is more likely to occur in unspayed females so the lump should be checked out as well. Your dog should definitely get checked out by a vet. A lump near the anus could be an issue with an anal gland, anal fistula, or a tumor. The vet will do a thorough exam and can discuss additional diagnostics needed to determine what is going on.

As for the bump, my biggest concern would be an enlarged lymph node and mammary cancer. The black stool, lethargy, and thirst are suggestive of bleeding in the intestines. Since she is not spayed, a pyometra would also be a possibility. You need to get her to a veterinarian as soon as possible for bloodwork and abdominal x-rays or ultrasound.

Hello there from across the pond! Lumps and bumps on older dogs are fairly typical and are to be expected with an older pet. By and large, lumps and bumps that are round, smooth, and/or freely movable generally speaking are not causes for alarm. However, lumps and bumps that become red, inflamed, warm to the touch, itchy, have rough edges, are rapidly growing, or have discharge coming from them need to be looked at by a veterinarian and have them assessed. Regardless, I would recommend your veterinarian take a look at Chester and take small sample of the small mass he has and look at it under a microscope. From there, your vet can determine the nature of the mass and if it is concerning. You may also discuss surgical removal of the small mass if that is recommended by your vet. I hope this has helped!

Sometimes these are fatty tumors that generally do not cause a problem and are not cause for concern, but it's always good to have a veterinarian check these just to be sure. Loss of control of the bowels is also not uncommon in older pets just like it's not that uncommon in older people! However the disoriented walking and the weight loss is a concern that should be addressed by a veterinarian soon. Disorientated walking could be due to osteoarthritis or a neurological disorder causing her not to understand where her limbs are in space. Sometimes disorientation can be a sign of canine cognitive dysfunction (canine dementia). Weight loss could be because she is eating less due to pain from arthritis or it could be due to organ dysfunction or neoplasia (cancer).
