My dog has hives and lumps after flea treatment. Is it serious?

Thatr looks like hives, so he may have come into contact with something he is sensistive to. I suggest giving him a lukewarm bath with a mild pet shampoo and if they do not improve significantly by tomorrow, get him in to your vet for an exam. Of course, if he gets worse, has trouble bresthing, becomes lethargic, develops vomiting or diarrhea or any other adverse symptom get him to your vet right away.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Brutus! After a bad flea infestation and reaction it is best to have your Vet treat the skin with a course of antibiotics and steroids. A skin infection usually results from all the scratching from the fleas. This is the quickest way to resolving Brutus's skin issues and to make him feel better. You can try the cream but I wouldn't want him to lick it and it will get stuck in his fur. Plus that is a very large area for cream. I hope this helps and I wish Brutus the best!

Hi and thanks for your post on Boop by Petco. Oh dear, this sounds like Bella has hives indicating an allergic reactions to something she was exposed to. Please take her into a veterinarian right away for treatment. She will need antihistamines and a steroid. Sometime we never know the inciting cause but insects or environmental allergens are the most common, unless he is receiving medications or was recently vaccinated (in the last 24 hours). The standard treatment for hives is benadryl and steroids. Ideally you should have him seen by your Vet. You can try to give him some Benadryl but I doubt it will strong enough to counteract a reaction that is this severe. The Benadryl dose is 1mg/pound of body weight by mouth up to every 8 hours. Example: if he is 75 pounds you would give him 75mg (3 of the human adult 25mg capsules). Yes, the dosing for dogs is much higher than dosing for humans. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Marley! Thanks for the pictures! The bumps are not classic for hives. Hives are flatter and larger usually. The most likely cause of the bumps is a skin infection or mites (demodex or scabies). I don't think you should stress! But I do think Marley should see your Vet. The mites are diagnosed on skin scrapings and treated with ivermectin or Revolution (for scabies) and Nexgard, Simparica or Bravecto for demodex. Skin infections are treated with oral antibiotics and something to stop the scratching (presnisone or apoquel). For a first time skin infection I wouldn't panic over allergies but if it is reoccurring then a discussion about allergies should take place. I hope this helps and I wish Marley a speedy recovery!

These lumps are not typical of a flea allergy dermatitis. That typically is just a superficial rash with itching, hair loss, scabs, etc. These lumps are concerning. Your pet may have developed abscesses which are deeper infections that form pockets of pus or infectious fluid. This is worth a trip to the vet for a recheck. I do not feel that it is a life threatening emergency, but it should be addressed by your veterinarian as soon as regular business hours resume. Your pet may need prescription antibiotics, the lumps may need to be aspirated or checked with a needle and if they are full of pus, they should be drained. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! These could be either benign changes such as hives from an allergic reaction (since it came so suddenly) vs potentially masses. I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian to better characterize these changes. If it looks more like a mass, your veterinarian could perform a test called a fine needle aspirate which is easy, cheap and pain-free. Sometimes, a biopsy is required for a diagnosis. Have your pup evaluated by your veterinarian to have this test performed to try to sort out what the diagnosis is so that the best course of action can be determined.
