Dog esophagitis: How long for meds to work or get a second opinion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 8 months old | 25 lbs

I recently took my dog to the vet because of gagging and seemingly choking. After an xray and no foreign objects found in his throat, we were sent home with cough medicine and antibiotics to treat esophagitis. Does this issue take a while to resolve or should we search for a second opinion?

I'd give Big Black a couple of days on the medication first to see how he goes. If you don't see any improvement by the end of the week, then I would consider taking him back into a vet or another vet for a second opinion.
