Should I worry about my cats getting FIP from human coronavirus?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 11 months old | 10 lbs

I've heard that there's been a case of the Coronavirus found in a human here in the US. I lost a kitten to FIP 2 years ago. I have cats that are still under age 3, but I'm in Pittsburgh PA not Washington & I rarely leave the house. Are my cats at risk of contracting it? I don't want to lose another cat to that awful disease!

FIP for cats is not that straight forward. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how the virus affects humans. In cats, corona virus is a very common virus. It is not known how or why, but in some cats the virus mutates and causes the clinical signs of FIP. It is suspected there is something in the interactions with the host immune system.
