My dog's nail is torn and he keeps licking it. Does he need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 65 lbs

Not sure what to do about torn nail. Happened 3 days ago, it appears broken down the side. Dog was digging in icey snow, apparently. Dog can walk on foot okay, but we have kept it bandaged because he is licking constantly and it seems tender. Girlfriend doesn't want to bring to vet, I don't know and would like 2nd opinion (see attached pics). I have washed it and bandaged it and he can put pressure. We also used styptik powder. Thanks for any advice!

Unfortunately, the nail looks like it will need to be cut back. It's broken down to the quick and will likely continue to cause pain and discomfort until it's removed. Barrett is going to need to see the vet. They can also prescribe pain medication to make him more comfortable.
