My puppy has diarrhea after giardia, can't eat chicken. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Female | spayed | 8 months and 28 days old | 18 lbs

8 month pup just finished her 3rd giardia treatment and results have now come back clear. It’s been almost 4 weeks since her medication finished and she still has diarrhoea. I can’t do the chicken and rice diet as chicken gives her yellow diarrhoea. She’s on a grain free fish based diet and it isn’t helping. What can I do ?

You can try cottage cheese and plain rice. Ground turkey or ground beef can also be used in place of chicken. Be sure to drain either after cooking. A veterinary probiotic may help to promote a healthy gut. Brands include ProStora, ProViable or FortiFlora. Consider rechecking a fecal sample to rule out other in intestinal parasites.
