My kitten's eye is shut after neuter surgery. What should I do?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 5 months and 18 days old | 6 lbs

Kitten got Neutered Today. I believe this is due to the anesthetic but his right eye is shut/squinted and he has only opened more than halfway a handful of times.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Otis. This may be due to ointment used in his eye during surgery to prevent it from drying out. I would monitor him for now. If this continues over the next 24-48 hours, have him seen by a vet again. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could be due to perhaps some of that infection component still being present. It would be best to culture this discharge to determine which would be the best antibiotic to treat it and proceed with therapy. In some cases, a revision surgery may be needed. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sparky. Horner's syndrome is not a common side effect from anesthesia and it does not frequently happen in young animals. She would need to see her veterinarian to know for sure though. She could have an eye infection or even an ulcer (scratch across the surface of the eye). Anesthesia does dry out the eyes making them more prone to ulcers. It would be a good idea for her to see her veterinarian again if possible as she may need medication. I hope this information helps!

Many shelter kittens are exposed to various bacteria and viruses, and upper respiratory infections are common. I recommend that you help Nesquick keep the eye clean by using a warm wet wash cloth to gently wipe away the discharge. If the eyelids or conjunctiva appears swollen, then he should be checked out by a vet. Some viral infections of the eye can lead to blindness. Since most of these infections are viral, they will need time to run their course. Antibiotics may be used even with primary viral infections to make sure that we are helping the body fight off any secondary bacterial invaders. I would make sure that Nesquick sees a vet if he has a poor appetite, is progressively lethargic, or has a rectal temperature over 103. Hi and thanks for posting. If your kitten is not wanting to open its eye and the eye is watering, it may have an eye infection that will need treatment by a veterinarian. Your veterinarian will do an eye exam and may prescribe antibiotics or other medications as needed. Eye infections can be very uncomfortable so I would recommend taking the kitten in soon. At 5 and a half days of age, that is young for the eye to be open, and there is a concern that it won't be fully developed as you fear the eye was forced open. He needs to see a vet right away, as this could permanently damage his eyesight. You are doing the right thing by keeping the lighting dim and covering the windows, and you want to make sure the eye isn't too dry, which is why he needs to see a vet to get checked out. He can't be separated long from his mother, so please bring the mother and siblings to the appointment as well, and I would take them all in today. He should see a vet asap. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. If Henry had an upper respiratory infection / eye infection, it may still be resolving. If it is due to a viral infection, the medications won't help unfortunately and you just have to wait it out and wait for his immune system to fight it off. If he begins squinting his eye or it becomes red / swollen, I would take him back in to be examined by a veterinarian. Otherwise just keep monitoring the eye for now.I hope this helps! greys eyes was watering so i took her to the vet and i also took snowy to make sure its not going to affect him they told me they will call me when they are done when i picked both of my cats up my healthy cat snowey had something in her eye the vet
Hello. It is possible that Snowey is reacting to something that was used in the eyes. Closed eyes are an indication the eyes really are bothering him. If you have an emergency clinic nearby it would be a good idea to have Snowey evaluated to make sure he is not developing any potential problems with the eyes. My dog was neutered yesterday and today I noticed blood in his eyes why
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. This is possibly related to the anesthesia he received yesterday. I recommend that you have Bubba evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I agree that by 2 weeks of age the kittens eyes should be open and there would be concern for abnormal development or an infection causing adhesions. You may want to see if your vet feels comfortable applying a warm compress and then gently trying to ease the eyelids apart - this might help with adhesions. Otherwise anesthesia and using an instrument to separate the lids (surgery to cut the lid is not recommended) may be necessary since the eyes need to be open for appropriate development of the eye and neurologic pathway to the brain.

I have a cat with 3 kittens. Kittens are off 3weeks age. For last 4 days kittens started coming out and playing around. Today i noticed eye of one kitten which is not fully open. Attached the photo of same. Need an advice on the same.
It looks like your kitten is getting either an eye infection or has injured the cornea. I recommend to have your kitten examined by the veterinarian who will need to check him for any wounds to the cornea. If an eye infection is the cause, He will get an antibiotic eyedrops. You will need to protect the area from rubbing by having him wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. He will also need to gently clean any discharge with a wet cotton ball. Best of luck.
