Moving to Georgia: Are St. Bernards and Newfoundlands okay in heat?

Hello I am moving to Georgia, but love St. Bernards and NewFoundlands. Is the south a bad place to own dogs such as these? Please give me some advice. Thank you. Jarrod Gilligan

Hi Jarrod. A St Bernard is my dream dog! It does get very hot and humid down south in the summer. You can get one of these dogs, but in the summer, they need to kept indoors in the a/c during the day and night, and taken out for short periods of time just to potty when very hot. This is not a dog that should be kept outdoors a lot of the time in the summer.

Hi! I was thinking of getting a Newfoundland. But being from the Central Valley in California I do have some concerns with weather. Would living here be okay to have a Newfoundland with our climate? I ultimately don’t want to make the dog miserable.
You could have a Newfie in California, but you have to take precautions. Make sure on hot days the dog is inside with air conditioning, or next to a fan in a cool dark room. Do not go for long walks or exercise on hot days. Keep the walks short so the dog can go potty, and do the walks early in the morning and later in the evening when it's cooler. Always make sure there is plenty of fresh cool water for them to drink.

He is a one year old Saint Bernard. We got home from a long walk about 20 minutes ago, but he is still panting and drooling heavily. Is this a heatstroke or is it normal?
It’s hard to know if that’s heatstroke without knowing how hot it is outside, how heavy his activity was and what his temperature is. You can take a dogs temperature at home with a 10 second digital thermometer and lubricant. A dog’s normal temperature is between 99 to 102.5°F. If this is not usual behavior after a walk, I recommend to have him seen by the veterinarian quickly. Heat stroke, torsion or toxin ingestion could all present like this. It’s best to be safe. Hello! I am moving to Episkopi, Cyprus with the army for 2 years and I am wanting to take my husky. I have heard they can adapt to the weather, but I would like to know if this is true?
IT is true, they can adapt but they are generally quite miserable most of the summer, you will need to make sure they are with air condition most of the days and you will only be able to take him out early morning and evenings.

Hiie.i am from india. In which state i live temperature always goes to 45°c in summers.can beagle survive in that temperature. I am worried about. If no yhan what can i do for him to make him comfortable.
You will need to make sure Shiro is kept indoors during the day in the air conditioning or with a fan. Do not let him stay outside. Make sure he always has cool water to drink. Walk him early in the morning and later in the evening when it's cooler. I hope this helps!

Can a husky live in the Caribbean?
Hello. Under the right circumstances, a Husky can live anywhere. If your home is air-conditioned or shaded with lots of nice breezes, this would be perfect. But as long as you keep the dog very well brushed out to remove all of the undercoat & he/she has a place to get out of the sun, you will be fine. I do not recommend shaving the coat because the topcoat can actually act as a hat & protect the skin from the sun. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

I live in Texas and am a runner. I log miles in very hot temperatures. I'd like to get a dog as a running companion. I worry that a dog will overheat because I've heard they don't sweat. What sorts of dogs would be good for that? Can dogs adapt to ru
Dogs can adapt to running in hotter weather, however going out at times where it is cooler, packing enough water for your dog to take breaks and drink on the way, and using items such as dog booties to protect feet from hot surfaces can all help ensure the run goes smoothly for you and your companion. If it is unbearably hot it is best to leave Fido at home where he can rest in some shade instead. Dogs are just like people, so you'll want to work up to a longer exercise routine over time, rather than starting out on a big long hike or jog at once that is likely to exhaust and overheat your dog. Dogs can sweat through the pads of their feet and also release heat through panting, so ensuring they're given enough water, and even something such as a misting spray and shaded areas for breaks to take a moment to cool off can help.

What is the best but most cost cost efficient food to feed a st. bernard puppy? She will be 11 weeks when i bring her home. Many thanks
Saint bernards, as will all large and especially giant breed puppies have very specific nutritional needs as they are growing and developing and a well formulated diet can help to minimise the risk of developing growth and joint issues such as hip dysplasia - I would recommend royal canin giant range up to 18-24months of age, feeding strictly to maintain a healthy body condition score (lean but with adequate muscle development) in order to optimise healthy growth. A cheaper alternative would be a greyhound puppy food but this is not as specific for giant breeds. A saint bernard is not an 'economy' breed of dog and remember that all routine treatments, insurance policies and medical/surgical care are going to be significantly greater than a medium sized dog throughout their life

Yes, Pitbulls or American Bully breeds should both do well in an Indian climate provided that they have access to water, and a shaded cool area (such as an air conditioned home or well-ventilated room with a strong fan) during times of extreme heat. During the coolest times of the year, a dog sweater or jacket may be beneficial for warmth due to their thin coats.

It is very hot outside 98 and my three year old boston wants to be with me outside for hours. He has water if needed and he moves around to shade,sun. I am not sure if I should leave him outside for just a certain amount of time before putting him in
He is a brachycephalic breed which means that he has a short snout and upper airway that is not adapt to being in hot climates for long periods of time. Therefore he is more at risk to having heat stroke than other breeds. I would recommend not leaving him outside for more than 30 mins- 1 hr at a time, even with shade, and definitely not to leave him out without direct supervision. You should always be able to monitor his activity level for any signs of being overheated. I hope your pet Judd stays safe out there in this scorching heat. It's always best to be safe than sorry. Any tips to keeping my French bulldog cool in the hot weather?
Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Great question, this is very very important in Frenchies! 1. Air conditioning and staying inside on hot days 2. Very short periods of exercise and chasing balls to prevent excessive panting and swelling 3. A spray bottle with cool water/hose or sprinkler /kiddie pool for Frank to go in when he is hot. 4. Fans at Frank's level so he can cool himself 5. Lots of areas of shade outside 6. As soon as Frank looks tired (ideally before he looks tired) stop playing or running 7. Ice-cube treats (frozen chicken broath) Best of luck with Frank!
