My dog couldn't stand. Did I make the right choice to put him down?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 14 years and 8 months old | 50 lbs

I had my dog PTS yesterday, suspected stroke, he couldn't stand. He was fine on Sunday, but Monday his back legs were very weak and he was struggling to stand. Vet prescribed gabapentin. He deteriorated further overnight and by morning could not stand at all, his front legs splayed. I've since read about vestibular disease, he had these symptoms but the vet didn't mention it. Only difference is that VD is non progressive. I'm so upset thinking we may have put him to sleep wrongly

First off, I'm so sorry you had to say goodbye to Murphy. Please accept my condolences for your loss. You are right that vestibular disease isn't progressive, and it sounds like to me his symptoms were getting worse over time. To be honest, I think you did the right thing for him. It sounds like he had a pretty poor quality of life, and letting him go peacefully was a very kind thing to do, even though it was hard. Do not upset yourself thinking you put him to sleep wrongly, I think you made the right decision. Be kind to yourself.
