My 5-month-old Aussie puppy has a head injury. What happened?

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 40 lbs

I came home last night to my 5 month old Australia shepherd with this on top of his head. Only ones around was 11 yro girl and a very fiesty Chihuahua...any idea what may of caused this?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Colsen. It could be from an injury. If you have a very feisty Chihuahua. they could have been playing and it may have gone a little far causing this. I would gently clean the wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! It is hard to say from the picture but the wound looks superficial. Because it is on the head I would be worried he is causing himself trauma due to something else, like an ear infection. If he is scratching the area he is likely uncomfortable and I do recommend taking him to a vet for relief. If not, you can try cleaning the area with a mild soap and water (no more than 2 times daily) and make sure the area is dry after. Good luck and kisses to the pup!

My dog has now two spots on her face looks like holes with dried up blood

My dog has something on his head
Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. Based on the photo you provided, it appears as though Stitch has an abrasion that may be secondarily infected. It does not look very deep based on the photo. If you are unable to get to a veterinarian to have this looked at right away, you can use a diluted solution of betadine and saline (mixed together until you have a light brown liquid) and use this to clean the abrasion of any contaminants. Once clean, you can then use a topical cream such as Sentry Topical Wound cream (applied to the area twice daily until resolved) found at your local Petco. I would also recommend that you use a plastic cone around his head to help prevent him from rubbing his head, which would further worsen the area. If this does not improve or it worsens, I would then recommend having a veterinarian examine Stitch so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. My puppy got a scratch from another dog today, on his face. He paws at it some, but isn't scratching excessively. Do I need to treat the wound, and how?
Thank you for using Boop by Petco. Keep the wound clean and dry. You can use just a damp cloth to clean the wound if needed. I would not recommend using any appointments or peroxide is that can cause worsening irritation. It will probably heal up just fine, but if you notice any swelling or discharge I recommend that does it to rule out infection or need for antibiotics.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. I have a 3 week old puppy Yorki and pug mixed and it has a hard bump in its head it's pretty small
Thanks for visiitng Boop by Petco. If it is a small bump then it is likely a bug bite. Monitor it for now to see if it resolves on its own within 3-7 days, especially if it is not bothering Max. You can also place a very thin layer of Neosporin on the area once every 12 hrs to help prevent infection. If it does seem to bother him then its best to place an e-collar on him to prevent him from scratching at it and then getting it checked out by your vet to ensure he doesn't need oral antibiotics to get this to resolve. Thank you for using Boop by Petco! While this may be caused by a bite from another dog, from my experience, this looks a little bit more like a wound from nudging something constantly with the nose. Perhaps nudging a door to a crate, or sticking his nose under a door repeatedly. I recommend keeping a close eye on the area, and maybe even getting Bear an E-collar or "cone" so that he does not cause further trauma to the area. I advise against applying antibiotic ointments such as Neosporin as Bear is likely to lick them off quickly. I hope this helps and that all is well with Bear!

Hi and thanks for posting! Sometimes bite wounds can leave pockets in the skin making the wound worse than they appear initially. It would be a good idea for this to be evaluated by a veterinarian. Your veterinarian will asses the area for pockets in the skin and asses whether or not stitches are needed. It seems small enough for tissue glue to be used but the wound may need to be closed with a stitch or two. A lot of bacteria is intro introduced into the skin and surrounding tissue during a bite. Brisquette may need systemic antibiotics as well to help lessen the chance of developing an infection. I hope this helps and thanks for using Boop by Petco!

My puppy has a bump on her head and it looks like it is scabing over and really red!
Hi and thank you for your question on Boop by Petco! From the pictures it appears like a scab or a cyst that ruptured (more common in older dogs than younger dogs). You can clean it daily with 3% hydrogen peroxide and if it does not appear to be healing up in a few days you may need to take her into her veterinarian to take a closer look. Best to you!
