How long do 12-year-old FIV+ cats with health issues typically live?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Merry Hello, I am considering adopting a dormestic short hair cat from the local animal shelter. The cat is 12 years old, has FIV, will have no teeth, slight due cloudiness, might be anemic. They said other wise he is a healthy cat. Realistically how long can I expect him to live?

Without being him in person, I can't say how long you can expect him to live. Having him seen by a vet would be the best indication. Look, even if he only lives a few months, think about how much that would mean to him living in a loving home instead of in a shelter. You'd be giving him a great gift, no matter how long he lives.
