Is Kidney Shield omega-3 supplement good for my cat's kidney disease?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 20 years old | 9.5 lbs

Hi! Tony has early Kidney disease with an elevated phosphorus level of 5.2. Do you know of this supplement called kidney shield (omega 3 fatty acids?) and would you recommend it? Thanks

I do not recommend it. I see it's a product sold on Amazon, and typically these types of "natural" supplements do nothing and are a waste of money. I would speak to Tony's vet about putting him on a prescription kidney diet. Studies have shown cats live on average two years longer on a kidney diet who have kidney disease than cats not on a kidney diet who have kidney disease.

Yes, it is a good thing that Tony is on a kidney diet now. Studies have shown that cats with kidney failure who are placed on a kidney diet live on average of two years longer than cats with kidney failure who are not on a kidney diet. I hope this helps!

In general, foods low in sodium and phosphorus are good choices for patients with kidney disease. Hello. Azodyl is a probiotic/prebiotic that the company claims to work by "enteric dialysis". This means a waste product called urea is cleaned up in the gut thus making less available for circulation. This supposedly makes it easier for the kidneys to function by reducing azotemia & uremia in chronic renal failure. There is little clinical evidence at this time to support the companies claims. This product will not harm the kidneys, but you will not see significant changes in Tony's overall condition or blood work. I think you may see more benefit from the omega 3 supplement than anything else. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

There is a lot of misconception when it comes to pet food. Grains are not bad for pets as long as they are the right kind, high-quality and easy to digest. They provide many essential amino acids that are not found in animal products. Royal Canin and Science Diet are both high quality brands with lots of research, data and good quality control. Switching to the recommended diet is the best thing you can do for Mercy. The diet contains controlled protein, controlled phosphorus, controlled potassium and additional omega three fatty acid supplements as well as antioxidants. You can certainly supplement her as it is not likely to hurt but the main control for kidney disease will be found with the protein and phosphorus. The best supplement for kidney health is water. There are not any specific supplements other than that are known to prevent kidney problems. There are supplements that are important for them to get when they are in kidney failure, but are not necessary before then. Canned food is a good way to encourage water intake and you can even add a little more water to it for increased water consumption. It's also good to have fresh, clean, water always available. No, I would not give this to a cat who has kidney problems. Studies have found that supplementation with these fatty acids may cause renal damage. It's very important have strictly controlled protein in diets of cats with kidney disease, and giving them these may through off the balance.

There are many options, the one change which is proven to extend life expectancy and quality is to convert to a specialist kidney diet, preferably wet kidney food. These are enriched with antioxidants and b vitamins, contain highly digestible protein to reduce the amount of work the kidneys need to do and are high in antiinflammatory omega fatty acids. A kidney tonic such as pronefra can also help. Regular blood and urine testing to track progress is important as additional measures to treat high phosphorous, urine protein loss and high blood pressure may need to be added over time

Hello, thank you for using Pet Coach. Unfortunately there are no food toppers that I am aware of that will be suitable for a cat with kidney disease. Sticking to a strict prescription kidney diet is the BEST treatment for kidney disease and I don't suggest you stray from that. I don't know if you are only feeding Tony the dry formula but most come also as canned food so you could always top off with the canned food. You could even puree it into a gravy if you wish. That's a good question. There really aren't any similar "kidney support" supplements that are analogous to the general liver support supplements such as milk thistle. If we have kidney disease present, then there are changes we can make to diet, and fluid supplementation is the most important way to support kidneys. But there's no good preventative supplement. Probably the closest thing would be omega fatty acids such as those in fish oil, which provide general anti-inflammatory benefits for the body.
