My cat is scratching her ear; has purple lumps and brown wax. Serious?

Recently my cat has been scratching at her ear a lot. When i checked to see what the problem was it seems like there’s a bunch of small purple lumps in her ear covered in a brown ear wax. I cleaned her ears with a pet ear solution but her ears are basically the same. I just want to make sure this isn’t something serious and she’ll be okay

It could be Kitty has an ear infection. In cat's her age, ear infections are likely caused by yeast or bacteria, and you need to have her seen by a vet to have this diagnosed and treated. Leaving this untreated can lead to hearing loss.

These are most likely ceruminous cysts, which are essentially cysts filled with ear wax. We see this condition with a disorder known as cystadenomatosis in cats. These can be in the ear canals, on the ear flaps, around the eyes, mouth and occasionally the anus. Unfortunately there is no medical treatment for the underlying disease. If they extend down into the canals, the only treatment is total ear canal removal. However, the individual cysts can be removed with a surgical laser. I recommend taking Mario to the vet, so they can provide and accurate diagnosis and assess the extent of these. I hope that helps.

Hello! With out at least a picture of the bumps its hard to give you an idea of what may be going on. I can tell you that the most common reason cats scratch there ears is due to a mite infection. Another common problem are polyps in her ear, which are usually in the ear canal and can cause cats to scratch their ears. The bumps around the outside of her ears could be irritation from her scratching the area. Other considerations could be a primary dermatological problem and neoplasia. While age is certainly not a disease, neoplasia is more common in older pets and therefore has to be on the list. I do not think Spicy is any immediate danger. I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian as for an examination of her ears and possibly some tests of the skin around the ears. Hopefully this helps a bit!

Noticed this first last night. 2 yo female cat with lump behind both ears and swelling on left part of neck. She keeps scratching and shakong her head
Oreo could have a bite wound and associated abscesses causing the swelling, or have ear mite infestations and be working on aural hematomas. Aural hematomas are fluid pockets in between the ear cartilages and are very painful. When cats have ear issues they often scratch and shake their heads because it makes them itchy and painful. Oreo needs to see a vet to get her on the proper medications to make her feel better. She may need to be on a steroid like prednisolone, antibiotics, and anti-parasitic medication for ear mites, if that is going on.

my cat has a weird thing on her ear. it just appeared this morning.
It looks like she may have had an itchy ear and scratched too hard, but since the itch or irritation was enough to make her do that, it's worth getting checked by your vet. It could indicate an ear infection, ear mites, fleas, there are a number of possibilities. Your vet will do a physical exam, have a look in her ears, maybe further diagnostics if they feel she needs them, and, based on the results, will be better able to tell you what's going on and how best to treat it.

This looks like ceruminous cystomatosis which is a non-cancerous tumor of the wax glands in the ears. Treatment involves removal of the lesions (which often will regrow and need to be removed again) either surgically, with a laser, or with cautery. It is important to note that surgical removal will likely lead to scar tissue formation and some deformation of the ear flap. I suggest you have Mowgli examined by your vet when you can.

My kitten, almost 4 months old, has 2, i think skin tags almost in her ear. She also has big scab in the middle of her ear that almost looks like a ball of human ear wax.
Poor Juniper. It's hard to get an idea of whats going on without a photo at least. Skin tags are not common in kittens. The ball of wax is also abnormal in most instances and I would be concerned that there is an ear infection of yeast or bacterial or perhaps an ear mite infection. It could also be a combination of infections. I recommend to play it safe and have Juniper examined by her veterinarian today if possible. Ear infections can get worse quickly so it's best to know if one is present so it can be addressed quickly. Best of luck.

I noticed what seems like a growth on my cats ear. I'm not sure if it's anything serious, or if it just remnants of an injury he may have sustained during his outdoor days. Maybe you can shed some light on it.
Hello. This can one of several things including a simple keratin filled follicular cyst, to ceruminous cystomatosis, to melanoma ( not very common in cats ). These lumps can be pretty deceiving until a biopsy is taken & the sample sent to a pathologist for identification. At the very least, consider having a fine needle aspirate done. My year and a half old, female, indoor cat has been scratching the area between her eye and ear so much that she is bleeding and scabbing. She is a white cat, so it is extremely evident how red and irritated her skin is. She's never done this before
Poor Lily! She could have an ear infection, which is why she is scratching that area so much. I would take her into a vet now for an exam. The vet can confirm if she does have an ear infection, and can treat it. It's important to have any potential ear infections examined and treated promptly, as leaving them untreated can lead to hearing loss.

It sounds like Lily has an ear infection, which could be caused by ear mites, yeast, or bacterial. I would have her seen by a vet tomorrow, as the cause of the ear infection would need to be diagnosed in order to treat her properly. The vet can diagnose if she does have an ear infection, the cause of it, and can prescribe treatment for it.

Ear infections can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, or a combination of these, and can be associated with dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. Juanita needs to see a vet to have an ear swab done. Your vet can look at the sample under the microscope and treat appropriately based on what is found. Your vet will also need to examine the ear with a scope to see if the ear drum is intact, as some medications cannot be used safely if the eardrum is ruptured. Ear infections can be very painful, and can sometimes progress to include the middle or inner ear, where they can cause neurologic signs or permanent hearing loss. Please book an appointment to have Juanita seen as soon as possible to help get her feeling better.
