Dog limping on old broken leg. Is it arthritis? What can I do now?

My pup broke her right front leg when she was around 7months old flash forward to now over 6 years later she is randomly limping on the same paw. We live in Az so I don’t think it can be the cold winter air making her joints hurt now the coldest weather is behind us. Arthritis you think? Anything I can do between now and the vet??

Yes, it could be arthritis. Sometimes though cold can affect a formally broken bone. It's weird, but I broke my humerus about 12 years ago and sometimes when it's really cold, the arm hurts. That could be happening to Sophee. Until you get her into a vet, keep her as warm as possible. Take her out briefly to potty, and bring her right back in when she's done. Please do not give her any human pain medication, many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

Poor Calie! Even though the broken bone healed naturally, it doesn't mean it healed correctly, and she could have developed arthritis in that leg which is worse in the cold weather. I would take her into the vet to have x-rays done on the leg in the next couple of days. That will show how the leg healed and will show if there is arthritis in that area. She will likely benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

It sounds like poor Laika is in a lot of pain. It could be that her arthritis has flared up, but there could be something else wrong such as a strained or torn ligament. Because she sounds so painful, the best thing to do is have her seen by a vet right away. The vet can diagnose what is causing her pain, and can treat her for it. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. My advice is to take her into a vet now. Good luck!

Hi I am sorry to hear about Sophie. It may not seem that Sophie is in overt pain but in most situations when a dog is limping that is their way of showing they are in pain and uncomfortable she may be limping from arthritis and just some recent overuse of her leg, mild trauma (jumping off a couch or bed, slipping on floors, etc), or she could have a soft tissue injury like a ligament sprain/strain. Most of the human OTC anti inflammatory medications are not safe for dogs so I could not recommend that for her. At her age it would be best for her doctor to examine her so the reason for the limping can be identified and they can provide Sophie with the safest possible medication that will provide her pain relief.

Great question! I would definitely take her into the vet for an x-ray since Moka has been limping for the past few days. The leg is obviously bothering her, or else she wouldn't limp at all. Keep in mind as well that limping is a sign of pain, and you don't want her to be in pain any longer. It could be that she has arthritis, which would get worse when the temperature drops at night, or it could be something more serious like a torn ligament in her knee. I would have her seen by a vet tomorrow if possible. I hope this helps :-)

Poor Pheobe. Rest her until then. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a leash, and bring her right back in when she's done. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. You can try some ice on the sore area to see if that helps.

Arthritis is very likely, sometimes it is exacerbated by another injury. It could also be a ligament sprain or muscle strain. There is also the less likely possibility of a hairline fracture or something more sinister like a bone tumour.

Causes of a front leg lameness could be: arthritis, a strain or sprain that needs more time, Lyme disease, neck injury and pinched nerve, peripheral nerve sheath tumor, bone tumor, bursitis/tendinitis. I think having Mya examined is a good idea since it’s been waxing and waning for a few months. Your Vet may want to check her for Lyme or take X-rays. She may just need a few weeks of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and rest. I hope this helps and I wish Mya a speedy recovery!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Damian. His leg appears quite deformed. He will need to see a veterinarian to discuss treatment options. X-rays will likely be needed to see the quality of the bones. In the meantime, do not allow him to perform strenuous activities or jump off of furniture. You do not want any unnecessary stress on the limb. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

It is concerning that Breda's had continued swelling with that joint. Since it's been ongoing for a couple of months, even if it was broken, the original break would be healed by now, but I would be concerned about arthritis in the joint. She is an older dog (based on the age you put in her pet info), and arthritis is common in older dogs. Rest certainly would be indicated with swelling, but I would also recommend a vet visit to get this area x-rayed to look for signs of arthritis to confirm if that is what is causing the problem. Pain medication may also be indicated for her as well, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give her any human pain medication, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I'd give her vet a call now to make her an appointment, and start resting her. I hope this helps.

I have a 9 yo chiuahua mix, and everytime we come back for a walk he seems to have a limp on his front leg, same leg, everytime. He doesnt cry out in pain, just a limp. Hes a tad overweight, would this be the issue? And can I keep walking him?
It could be that Buddy is suffering from arthritis, and that's causing him to limp in pain. Arthritis is common in older dogs. I would take Buddy into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose if he is suffering from arthritis, and can give him some pain meds for it. Rimadyl (an NSAID) is a good drug to give to help with the symptoms of arthritis. I also recommend giving him glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate supplements. They provide the necessary nutrients for cartilage repair and function. Use of them helps relieve some of the symptoms of arthritis, and you can use it in conjuction with Rimadyl to help maximize relief from his symptoms.
