My French Bulldog snores, chokes, and can't sleep. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 11 months old | 26 lbs

Lately Beltre has seemed to be more uncomfortable than usual. The other day his eye was swollen, by the next morning it was fine. He hasn’t slept through a night in about a week. We give him a Benadryl every night before bed and it seems to do well for about 4 hours. Tonight, he has seemed like he wants to throw up and you can almost hear the snot in his throat. Of course he snores and at times seems to choke on snot while snoring which of course wakes him up . What else can we do!?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Beltre. I'm concerned about him. He is a French Bulldog, and some of these breathing problems could be due to the shape of his face. Dogs with the flatter face like him are prone to breathing issues, specifically brachychephalic airway disease. It could also be that he is suffering from allergies, which is why the Benadryl helps for a short period of time. Due to his issues, he needs to see a vet. I would take him into one in the morning. However, while general allergies can cause a cough, this would be a bit unusual and other possible causes of coughing like pneumonia, bronchitis, and heart failure should be investigated. The coughing could also be due to pneumonitis secondary to exposure to the cleaning products. I recommend that you have Pacino evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to

My French bulldog was diagnosed with bronchitis He has had two rounds of steroids, and one round of anabiotic's He is still having a hard time breathing through his nose unless he is on the steroid. He still eats fine stools are fine B
This difficulty breathing could be related to his bronchitis, but the conformation of his nostrils and soft palate could be contributing to it as well. Because of his flat face, Jax will have an undersized throat and breathing passages, and when there is inflammation in the airways, it will be even harder for him to breathe. If he's congested, he may need bronchodilator, and you'd have to speak to your vet for a prescription for that. At home, you you can also try using a humidifier or bringing him into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections. When he's better from the bronchitis, it would be worth a discussion with your vet about his facial conformation. If he has stenotic nares, an elongated soft palate, and everted laryngeal saccules, having surgery done to correct this things will help with his breathing in the future.

I have a 4 year old English bulldog who has just started to wheeze or huff constantly. It’s has just graduated to being very frequent. What should I do? I am at a loss.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Abnormal breathing sounds can be a sign of many conditions such as pneumonia, bronchitis, heart disease, among many other possibilities. Given his breed, this can also be brachycehalic syndrome though that typically presents in a different way. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. My dog will suddenly stop breathing then wake up gasping for air, this often times happens when she's relaxed feeling safe and laying on her back next to me which also causes her to snor, is there anything I can do to help her?
This is a common issues in brachycephalic dogs like pugs, bulldogs, and frenchies. Many of these breeds require surgery to help assist them to breathe normally so depending on your dogs breed. This may be a consideration. Otherwise I would encourage your dog to sleep on its stomach with its head elevated. Make sure she is not overweight either as this will make the condition worse.

Oh my. Poor Brody : (. Because this was repetitive I suspect that your pet may have an underlying heart condition. Compressing his stomach may have inadvertently increased blood flow to the upper part of his body. It's hard to say for sure without examining him and listening to his heart for any murmurs or arrhythmias. Therefore I would recommend taking him in to your vet for a proper examination. He may be able to be managed with medication if he has an underlying heart condition. I hope Brody gets properly treated soon. Best of luck.

I just bought a puppy yesterday. He’s 10 weeks old. He’s a French bulldog. He has been making a coughing/wheezing/gagging noise. Not sure what to do. Any suggestions?
I'd have him seen by a vet tomorrow. He could have a respiratory infection or could be suffering from kennel cough. The vet can diagnose what is causing these symptoms and can treat him for it. As an aside, this could also be normal. He's a French bulldog, and due to their flatter face, they often make many noises like this. Still it's best to have him checked out to be safe. Sometimes, my dog's breathing stops and starts gagging and she snores at night time. Should I be concerned?
Your dog may have an elongated soft palate that causes an intermittent obstruction of air flow. Usually it is self limiting and doesn’t cause issues but if this is happening consistently there is a surgery that can be performed to help open up the airway. My bulldog has what sounds like a blocked nose which is causing him to wretch.
English bulldogs can suffer from an large array of upper respiratory issues affecting both its inner and outer portions. In this case, you may be referring to an issue known as stenotic nares. This is a term to describe the narrowing of the nasal openings. In some cases, surgical intervention is required to avoid respiratory distress episodes in these fellas. I would recommend having Alfie's nasal structure assessed to see if this could potentially be necessary. Hope this helps.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bentley. An upper respiratory tract infection cause the symptoms you have described. Small breed dogs are also prone to a condition known as collapsing trachea. This can be diagnosed on x-rays of his neck and chest. I recommend discussing these possibilities with his veterinarian. My dog always kind of snores when he breathes - what are signs of unhealthy breathing?
Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. There is no way for me to tell you if Iggy's "snoring" is a problem or not. I suggest you take a video of him breathing (making the noise) to show to your vet. After seeing that video and doing an examination on him they can give you more information as to whether or not this is a problem. All I can say without seeing him is that if this is a constant sound when he breathes all the time, he may have a polyp or a tumor in his nasal passages, sinus(es), nasopharynx, pharynx, larynx or the trachea. This noise is definitely something that needs to be addressed.
