My French Bulldog snores, chokes, and can't sleep. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 11 months old | 26 lbs

Lately Beltre has seemed to be more uncomfortable than usual. The other day his eye was swollen, by the next morning it was fine. He hasn’t slept through a night in about a week. We give him a Benadryl every night before bed and it seems to do well for about 4 hours. Tonight, he has seemed like he wants to throw up and you can almost hear the snot in his throat. Of course he snores and at times seems to choke on snot while snoring which of course wakes him up . What else can we do!?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Beltre. I'm concerned about him. He is a French Bulldog, and some of these breathing problems could be due to the shape of his face. Dogs with the flatter face like him are prone to breathing issues, specifically brachychephalic airway disease. It could also be that he is suffering from allergies, which is why the Benadryl helps for a short period of time. Due to his issues, he needs to see a vet. I would take him into one in the morning. I hope this helps!
