My puppy pooped mulch with blood and mucus. ER vet or monitor?

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 19 days old | 22 lbs

My dog pooped a good size piece of mulch accompanied by yellow mucus and a little blood. He ate after and is playing. Should I monitor him or take him to the emergency vet? He is 22lbs and 7 months old.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Bennett. The concern I have is that he may have more mulch still in his system given that one piece has come out. I'd monitor him for now. If you still see blood in his poop or other signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, a loss of appetite, or lethargy, take him into an ER vet right away. I hope this helps!

Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. If Hulu is not bleeding anymore and he is acting as normal, you need to monitor him at home. The bleeding could be a sign of rectal trauma, for example from passing hard, sharp faeces, or it may be a discharge with blood from anal glands. If Hulu starts to bleed again, or if he is scooting after defecation, you should get him checked over by your vets.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! He should be seen by a veterinarian if this continues so if it becomes a consistent finding or if it is also accompanied by diarrhea. Blood in the feces can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. If this continues, I recommend that you have Sami evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question. Congrats on your new puppy, but I'm sorry she has blood in her poop. It may be from stress or it could be something like intestinal worms, which are common in puppies. Given it's only a little bit of blood and as long as she is otherwise acting normally (eating, drinking), you can wait to have her seen by a vet in the morning. If the amount of blood in her poop increases, she starts vomiting, stops eating, or becomes very lethargic, take her into an ER vet right away. I hope this helps!

As long as Barney is eating and drinking normally, I wouldn't be too concerned about the mulch. You do need to watch him closely when he is outside to prevent eating any more mulch (or other things that puppies think might be a good idea to eat!). If he is less inclined to eat like normal, start vomiting, having diarrhea, or is straining to defecate, he needs to get checked out by a vet.

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Diarrhea with mucous like that is concerning for either a mild GI upset, or could be caused by a more severe problem such as IBD or cancer. The small bits of blood could just be a bit of colitis (inflammed colon) and some burst vessels, or could be due to a clotting disease or a tumor (the last two much less likely). If Louie is still eating, drinking, playing and acting normally, then you can monitor for now and if the blood or diarrhea gets worse then bring him to a vet. If you see any other signs such as weakness, vomiting, inappetance, trouble breathing, or more blood, then get Louie to a vet right away. One possible cause as well is rat bait toxicity, so if there is ANY chance Louie could have gotten into rat bait then I would have him checked by a vet right away. Overall, it is likely not a concern, however monitor closely and bring him to a vet if you see any decline. Best of luck with Louie!

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Iggy. I would be concerned that there is blood in his poop. It could be he has intestinal worms, as those are very common in puppies. I would have him checked out by a vet for this, as there can be very serious causes of blood in the poop like parvo. I'd take him into a vet today. I hope this helps!

It's best to take him to the ER, but it's possible that this can wait until tomorrow morning. I would need more information to make this call and you may consider having an online consult with one of our vets on Boop by Petco. I worry about this being a sign of a reaction to the medications, so I would at-least stop giving medication until you can talk with your vet. Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear and see that Maximus is having problems. It's hard to tell from the pictures if that is blood or something else. Certainly, if you keep seeing what appears to be blood, you would want to get him checked out by your vet. They can perform an exam, run a fecal test for parasites (worms), and perform other tests to see what the problem is. Certainly dietary indiscretion or eating things that he is not supposed to eat can irritate the gut, parasites, toxins, infections, among other things can cause problems. I hope Maximus is ok and gets better soon.
